Position Overview
The New York State Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) provides operational support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to more than 4,900 applications across 53 New York State agencies.
Under the direction of the Assistant Director, ITS 1 (Technical) within the Chief Technology Office, Enterprise Network Services, Data Center Networks, Cloud Networking group, the Information Technology Specialist 2‑Hourly, NS will support advanced multi‑cloud connectivity projects, networking activities, and ongoing mission‑critical initiatives.
Responsibilities- Support network connectivity for NYS agencies and their applications to, from and within Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform, and multiple NYS data centers.
- Support projects and Data Center Consolidation initiatives and network environments in data and voice Data Center networks and remote locations.
- Implement and support network changes, including code upgrades, cable infrastructure, network software, and hardware.
- Process assigned ITSM service requests for implementation and modification of load balancing and firewall policies on network equipment.
- Assist in the resolution of network issues and outages.
- Coordinate with User Support and System Administrators to provide Level II support for technical solutions.
- Configure, install, and troubleshoot network equipment in the NYS data centers, including firewalls, routers, switches, IPS devices, servers, VoIP phones, and wireless access points from vendors such as Arista, Aruba, Cisco, Dell, Hewlett Packard, Juniper, Lenovo, Meraki, and Palo Alto.
- Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation of active infrastructure, including Visio diagrams, procedures, and training manuals.
- Continuously improve IT data communications knowledge, including manufacturer‑specific training.
- Utilize network monitoring tools such as Zenoss, Splunk, NfSen, and Wireshark to monitor equipment and report issues to management.
- Understand data networking protocols including TCP/IP, OSI, OSPF, BGP, HTTP, SSL, DNS, TLS, WAP, and other LAN/WAN protocols.
- Work outside normal business hours and on‑call may be required due to the 24x7x365 nature of the systems supported by this team.
- Occasional travel may be required.
Minimum qualifications can be met through one of the following options:
- Open competitive: A bachelor’s or higher‑level degree, including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science.
- Open competitive: A bachelor’s or higher‑level degree in any field and one year of experience in information technology.
- Open competitive: 60 semester credit hours, including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science and one year of professional experience in information technology.
- Open competitive:
Two years of professional experience in information technology.
Promotion:
Open to NYS employees with one year of permanent competitive service as an Information Technology Specialist 1, Salary Grade (SG) 14.
Transfer:
Open to NYS employees with one year of permanent competitive service as an Information Technology Specialist 2 or Information Technology Specialist 2 Programming, SG‑18; or those with a title SG‑16 or higher deemed administrative under Section 52.6 of the Civil Service Law.
55b/c appointment:
This position is eligible for a 55b/c designation, and candidates are encouraged to apply.
Appointment to this position is contingent upon obtaining and/or maintaining New York State residency within six months of hiring.
Appointment is not final until all agency approvals have been granted.
