General Duties
This position encompasses professional and responsible highly technical consultative and/or administrative work unique to the design and engineering of complex datacenters, networks and cloud deployments. Under administrative direction of a university IT manager, with broad latitude for independent action or decision, the incumbent is responsible for the development of comprehensive infrastructure solutions. The engineer operates mission‑critical infrastructure and is responsible for the access and protection of sensitive data, systems, and networks.
The role may lead or participate in a team in planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining datacenter and cloud operations that include the management of IT facilities, network, security, telecommunications, servers, storage, and virtualization components.

Campus Specific InformationThe Office of Computing and Information Services (CIS) at the City University of New York (CUNY) supports the IT and telecommunications needs of CUNY's 26 colleges. CIS supports enterprise IT and applications, identifies and develops new technologies, operates and maintains the University's network, the enterprise Data Center, and the CUNY Service Desk. CIS also manages security, operates the CUNY Security Operations Center, develops disaster‑recovery plans, and supports the CUNYfirst ERP solution.
Key Responsibilities- Designs, implements, and maintains enterprise infrastructure solutions across on‑premises, hybrid, and cloud environments.
- Assists in implementing infrastructure security controls, vulnerability remediation, and compliance with institutional cybersecurity standards.
- Assists with infrastructure integration and automation through configuration management tools, API integrations, and operational process improvements.
- Monitors enterprise infrastructure environments to ensure reliability, availability, and optimal performance; supports monitoring and alerting platforms by configuring dashboards, alerts, and reporting.
- Responds to infrastructure alerts and incidents by investigating issues and coordinating resolution with infrastructure, application, and cybersecurity teams.
- Participates in infrastructure upgrades, patching, maintenance activities, and system performance optimization.
- Monitors public cloud and hybrid infrastructure environments, including management of IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS platforms.
- Assists in data protection strategies including backup, replication, disaster‑recovery configurations, and participates in disaster‑recovery testing and resilience planning.
- Participates in IT service management processes including incident, problem, and change management while maintaining accurate infrastructure documentation and system configurations.
- Collaborates with internal IT teams, stakeholders, and external vendors to support infrastructure initiatives, troubleshoot issues, and contribute to operational standards and knowledge sharing.
- Performs special projects, ad hoc assignments, and related duties consistent with the scope and responsibilities of the position, which may require travel across the five boroughs and participation in on‑call support outside of standard business hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
- Until further notice, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.
- An appointment to this competitive title/position in the Classified Civil Service Title Series will be made with a provisional status. Employees in provisional status must pass a competitive civil service examination and be appointed from a civil service list to remain in the title/position.
- A baccalaureate degree in computer science, engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of satisfactory full‑time experience in the design and engineering of complex datacenters, networks and/or cloud deployments.
