Senior Construction Underwriter

Property & Casualty Insurance Industry

Hybrid - NYC

An outstanding chance awaits a skilled general liability underwriter to become part of an expanding team! This role entails examining and evaluating submissions related to general liability in the construction sector, including wrap-up policies, project-specific coverage, and contractor programs. The underwriter will assess the quality of risks, examine loss history, evaluate financial stability, and ensure compliance with underwriting criteria. They will establish suitable coverage terms, conditions, and pricing based on the characteristics of the risks and current market conditions.

The responsibilities also include managing a portfolio to meet profitability and growth objectives. Performance indicators, loss ratios, and adherence to underwriting standards will be closely monitored. The underwriter must recognize and tackle negative trends, implementing corrective measures as needed. Moreover, they will act as a technical resource for junior underwriters and assistants, offering training and insight into best practices and the nuances of construction-related risks.

Ensuring that all underwriting decisions align with company policies, regulatory standards, and risk appetite is critical.

Candidates should possess a Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or a similar discipline. A minimum of seven years of underwriting experience is essential, with at least three years dedicated to construction general liability risks. A solid history of managing complex accounts and large-scale projects is required, along with strong negotiation and analytical skills. A thorough understanding of construction operations, the transfer of contractual risks, and insurance needs is necessary.

Candidates should also be proficient in rating tools, underwriting platforms, and the Microsoft Office Suite. Certifications such as CPCU, AU, or RPLU are preferred.
