Our Claims Department is currently seeking a Claims Technical Director Casualty - Auto Liability to join our growing team.

This is an exempt, full time, fully remote or hybrid out of our Itasca, IL, Worcester, MA, Syracuse, NY, Howell, MI or Richmond, VA office.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Claims Technical Director Casualty is atechnicalsubject matter expert responsible for advancing technicalexcellenceand decisionmakingacross high severity,complex,litigated claims.

Thisroleprovidesoversightand strategic guidance on large, complex, andhigh ‑ exposure casualty claims. Coaches core liability claim handlers on all aspects of the claim’s lifecycle including coverage, liability, risk transfer, litigation management, exposure evaluation, reserving and negotiation. Ensures consistent application of best practices, supports sound reserving, and drives optimal claim outcomes.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:

  • Act as a senior technical resource and provide subject matterexpertisefor complex casualty claims, including auto bodily injury, general liability, premises liability, products liability, and high-exposure lawsuits.
  • Collaborate withand coach assigned core liability claim handler son claims that meet defined complexity criteria, following the claim as long as needed to support exposure mitigation.
  • Conduct detailed technical reviews of claim files to ensure thorough investigation,accurate liability assessment, and effective litigation strategies to spot claim trends and improve performance.
  • Provideguidanceclaimshandlers on coverage analysis,damages evaluation, and exposure assessmenttopromote strong claim handling and improve claim decisions.
  • Supportclaimhandlers throughout the lifecycle of complex claims, including:
    • Investigation
      :

      Ensurethoroughfact-gathering and documentation.
    • Evaluation
      :

      Adviseoncase valuation strategies and exposure analysis.
    • Reserving
      :
      Recommend reserve adequacy and adjustments based on claim developments.
    • Litigation Management
      :

      Partner with defense counsel, assess legal strategies, and ensure alignment with company objectives.
    • Resolution Strategy
      :

      Guide negotiation approaches and settlement decisions foroptimaloutcomes.

Coaching & Development:

  • Develop core liability claim handlers through round tables, one on one coaching, collaboration on claim and litigation strategy, and role modeling to strengthen technical competencies(strategy, analysis,planning,and documentation) and enhance claims management performance.
  • Assess andcommunicateprogress ofclaimhandlers, including observation of readiness for more advanced claim handling roles.
  • Deliver feedback, training, and claims trend insights to improve team skillsets and consistency.
  • Partner with the Casualty Claims leadershiptoidentifyrisk trends, operational opportunities, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Assistin shaping claims handling strategies, policies, and standards across the casualty organization.

WHAT YOU NEED

TO APPLY:

  • 10+ years of casualty claims experience, including complex, high-severity, and litigated liability claims , management experience a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; CPCU, AIC, SCLA, JD, or similar credentials a plus
  • Demonstrated expertise in coverage analysis, investigation strategy, litigation management, and negotiation with high severity exposures
  • Strategic decision-making skills with a history of consistent quality, accurate reserving, and outcome optimization
  • Ability to influence without authority; strong communicator and collaborator, and ability to turn complex facts into clear direction
  • Proven ability to effectively coach, mentor, and influence claim handlers of varying experience levels
