Excess Casualty Underwriter – Renewables

Location: Hybrid or Remote

Department: Casualty Underwriting – Renewable Energy

About the Role

We are seeking an Excess Casualty Underwriter with approximately two years of underwriting experience and a strong interest in the renewable‑energy sector. This role supports the growth of our casualty portfolio across solar, wind, battery storage, and emerging clean‑energy technologies. The underwriter will evaluate new and renewal submissions, determine pricing and attachment strategies, and collaborate closely with brokers and internal stakeholders to deliver disciplined, profitable underwriting decisions.

Key Responsibilities New Business Underwriting
  • Review and analyze excess casualty submissions for renewable‑energy risks, including developers, owners/operators, EPC contractors, and manufacturers.
  • Assess exposures related to construction, operations, products, and contractual risk transfer.
  • Determine pricing, limits, and attachment points in accordance with underwriting guidelines and market conditions.
  • Communicate appetite and underwriting strategy to wholesale and retail brokers.
  • Support the development of new broker relationships within the renewable‑energy segment.
Renewal Underwriting
  • Evaluate renewal accounts for loss trends, exposure changes, and performance indicators.
  • Recommend pricing adjustments, limit deployment, and attachment point movement as needed.
  • Maintain strong communication with brokers regarding renewal expectations and timelines.
Exposure & Industry Focus

This role focuses on products and technologies supporting the clean‑energy transition, including: EV charging, carbon capture, hydrogen, biofuels, battery energy storage, equipment monitoring, fuel cells, robotics, sensors, solar, wind, and thermal technologies, among others. You will underwrite casualty exposures across development, construction, and operational phases, as well as manufacturers and distributors of these emerging technologies.

  • Maintain accurate documentation, file notes, and rating information within underwriting systems.
  • Collaborate with senior underwriters and product leaders on referrals and complex risks.
  • Stay current on renewable‑energy trends, regulatory developments, and casualty‑related emerging risks.
  • Contribute to team initiatives, underwriting projects, and continuous improvement efforts.
Qualifications
  • 2+ years of casualty underwriting experience
    , ideally with exposure to excess layers or construction/energy risks.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to evaluate severity‑driven exposures.
  • Familiarity with contractual risk transfer, additional insured requirements, and project‑specific underwriting considerations.
  • Effective communication skills with brokers and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple submissions and deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
