Pro Bono Supervising Attorney – National Legal Aid & Defender Association
Position Summary: The Pro Bono Supervising Attorney is one of several attorneys in the Division’s pro bono program staff reporting to the Managing Attorney. The role administrates and coordinates various pro bono program functions, including participation at community legal clinics; intake and assessment of cases for placement; engagement in the matching process; and substantive mentorship and technical assistance for all cases under supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Supervise and coordinate pro bono volunteer advocates and staff attorneys through Division programming, including fellowships, internships, clinic programs, and individual placements.
- Lead the intake and evaluation of prospective cases, spotting key issues and determining placement suitability.
- Manage placement of matters with pro bono volunteer advocates and provide ongoing supervision based on case complexity.
- Develop and update materials for legal trainings, case placements, and other instructional resources.
- Maintain a sensible caseload, primarily advisory and representational work for individuals facing removal proceedings or other immigration‑related applications.
- Develop strategies in response to emerging immigration issues and meet regularly with pro bono program leadership to provide progress reports.
- Monitor volunteer work using CC case management systems, Law Logix, and periodic file review.
- Deliver in‑house and outreach training, presentations, and workshops as directed.
- Comply with program reporting requirements, such as maintaining and updating case lists, submitting case narratives, and reporting to partners and stakeholders.
- Represent the organization at local committees, coalitions, and collaboratives; serve as a primary liaison with local elected officials and law enforcement representatives to enhance the organization’s presence and voice.
- Maintain and update electronic files in Law Logix and physical case files.
- Supervise internal staff attorneys and maintain an internal caseload secondary to supervision needs.
- Keep staff updated on changes in laws, procedures, and policies relevant to immigration and assist in developing legal strategies.
- Provide directed advocacy, program development, program representation with public and private stakeholders, and limited teaching/speaking as necessary.
