As a Delay Operator, you are the "guardian of the airwaves." In an environment where every second counts, you will monitor all incoming feeds to ensure our broadcast remains compliant with FCC regulations and internal editorial standards. You are the person who keeps us on the air by making split-second decisions to redact profanity, sensitive visuals, or legal liabilities before they reach millions of homes.
Key Responsibilities- Live Monitoring: Vigilantly monitor live news, talk shows, and field reports using digital delay systems (e.g., Ross).
- Real-time Redaction: Execute precise "dumps" or "mutes" of audio/video content that poses FCC risks.
- Editorial Judgment: Make lightning-fast calls on "borderline" content—knowing when to let a moment breathe and when to cut to protect the station.
- Communication: Maintain a constant loop with the Director and Producer to flag potential issues in upcoming segments.
- Logging & Reporting: Document all instances of delay usage, including timestamps and justifications, for legal and management review.
- Unshakeable Focus: You have the "nerves of steel" required to sit in a dark room and maintain 100% concentration for hours at a time.
- Tech Savvy: Familiarity with professional broadcast hardware and the "seven-second delay" workflow.
- Contextual Awareness: You understand the difference between a slip of the tongue and a news-worthy moment. You know the current FCC landscape like the back of your hand.
- Experience: 2+ years in a live broadcast environment (Control Room, Master Control, or Audio Op experience is a huge plus).
- Knowledge: Deep understanding of FCC Section 73.3999 regarding "Indecent and Profane" broadcasts.
- Reflexes: Exceptional hand-eye coordination and reaction times.
