Location: New York
Full-Time Supervising Immigration Attorney
This is an immediate hire position for a bilingual (English & Spanish) immigration attorney who is experienced, passionate, and mission‑driven.
Reports to:
Director, Immigration Legal Services.
- Provide supervision of legal staff and lead community‑based outreach and trainings, including KYR events.
- Supervise a team of paralegals and case workers on case strategies, written work, and overall case management for the life cycle of each case.
- Represent clients in straightforward and complex immigration matters, including applications and motions before USCIS, including naturalization and I‑485 interviews.
- Provide direct representation to a limited number of recently arrived non‑citizens who are in removal proceedings.
- Oversee and ensure compliance with all city and state grant reporting requirements. Track and report comprehensive data metrics and outcomes regarding both the clients represented and the services provided under each respective grant, including monthly and quarterly reports.
- Stay current with U.S. immigration law and policy updates to ensure effective advocacy.
- Formally conduct performance evaluations of paralegals and case workers and provide feedback for professional development.
- Perform case‑related administrative duties, including maintaining accurate, complete, and confidential case files and case management using legal software (e‑immigration).
- Liaise with partner community‑based organizations and other stakeholders to provide legal clinics.
- Represent CWHA in rapid response coalitions and meetings.
- All other tasks assigned by the Director of Legal Services.
Education and Experience Required
- Juris Doctor (JD).
- Admitted to the Bar in the State of New York or eligible to become licensed in New York.
- At least 4 (four) years of post‑JD experience in immigration law representing clients in affirmative relief applications to USCIS and in removal defense, preferably in a nonprofit or community‑based setting.
- Prior experience supervising staff managing program oversight or day‑to‑day operations and reporting on a legal program’s efforts.
- Ability to effectively communicate, collaborate, and connect with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Commitment to mentoring and teaching immigration law to less experienced advocates.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice and commitment to working with immigrants, low‑income clients and communities of color to advance equity.
- Bilingual:
Fluency in English and Spanish. - Excellent writing, research, analytical, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically, advocate effectively and proactively resolve issues or problems.
- Adept at managing competing priorities.
- Outstanding interpersonal, organizational, planning and time‑management skills.
- Strong respect for accuracy and meeting deadlines.
Salary is $90,000. This position is funded through a city contract, so starting salaries are set in advance according to the terms of the contract and are non‑negotiable. CWHA is committed to transparency and equity in compensation; salary ranges are determined based on a structured compensation plan that is regularly reviewed and updated based on market research and available funding.
