Duties Description Under the supervision of a Senior or a Principal Motor Vehicle License Examiner, Motor Vehicle License Examiners conduct road tests to ensure that only qualified persons are licensed to operate motor vehicles. They examine applicants for all categories of motor vehicle driver licenses including passenger vehicles, motorcycles, commercial driver licenses (tractor trailers and buses), certified examiners, and commercial driving school instructors at various locations to determine fitness based upon standard rating guidelines
* Examines and evaluates forms and documents for authenticity; verifies the identity of the applicant; and may confiscate suspicious documents.
* Inspects test vehicle for conformance with Department of Motor Vehicles requirements.
* Directs applicants through the road test route and evaluates driving performance.
* Provides applicants with immediate feedback regarding their road test performance; discloses road test results at the conclusion of the road test; and explains reasons for failure and makes recommendations.
* Determines if restrictions such as corrective lenses, hearing aids, etc. are to be applied on the license.
* Enters all information into a computerized tablet (electronic scoring device) to indicate license class-driving school vehicle, restrictions and client identification and test results; performs routine maintenance of electronic equipment; and troubleshoots and resolves electronic device problems.
Working Conditions:
You would have substantial contact with the public under stressful conditions and may be required to effectively de-escalate tense situations. You would be required to work outdoors, year-round, including during inclement weather and be required to provide your own transportation because the job may involve traveling to various remote assignments and locations where you would be working independently. You must be able to enter and exit the vehicles used in testing throughout the day including commercial vehicles such as tractor trailers, buses, and trucks that require the examiner to climb up into the driving compartment.
You would be required to walk around vehicles while carrying a computerized tablet (electronic scoring device), and to position obstacles prior to a road test. You must be able to stand for long periods of time, during and/or between road tests. In order to be successful in these positions, other important traits include interpersonal skills, friendliness, courtesy, accuracy, teamwork, respect, punctuality, and good attendance.
Minimum Qualifications To be eligible for appointment, candidates must meet one of following conditions as detailed below:

To be eligible for NY HELPS appointment, candidates must have:
Graduated from high school or have earned a high school equivalency diploma
AND you must have:
Either
1:
One year of experience that involved extensive face-to-face interaction with the general public while providing customer service.
OR
2: 30 semester credit hours of college-level study AND six months of extensive face-to-face interaction with the general public while providing customer service.
Transfer:
One year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service allocated to a G-12 or higher eligible for transfer and deemed administrative under Section 52.6 of the Civil Service Law; OR in a title approved for transfer under Section 70.1 of Civil Service Law. The transfer cannot be a second consecutive transfer resulting in an advancement of more than two salary grades.
