Director Of Customs & Trade Compliance

The Director of Customs & Trade Compliance leads the development, implementation, and oversight of customs compliance and import regulatory programs. This role ensures compliance with U.S. import regulations and applicable government agency requirements while supporting efficient and cost-effective import operations. The Director serves as the primary internal expert on customs and international trade matters and partners with customs brokers, freight forwarders, suppliers, logistics providers, and regulatory agencies to support the uninterrupted movement of goods.

The role also provides strategic guidance on tariff classification, country of origin, customs valuation, duty management, and trade risk mitigation.

Key Responsibilities

Customs Compliance Management

  • Oversee import compliance activities and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and company policies.
  • Manage customs entry filings and review import documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain customs records in accordance with federal recordkeeping requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and update customs compliance procedures, policies, and internal controls.
  • Lead responses to regulatory inquiries, audits, requests for information, notices of action, and related compliance matters.

Tariff Classification and Duty Management

  • Establish and maintain tariff classifications for imported products.
  • Ensure accurate country-of-origin determinations and product marking compliance.
  • Identify opportunities for duty savings and utilization of applicable trade programs.

Import Operations Oversight

  • Serve as the primary liaison with customs brokers, freight forwarders, carriers, and government agencies.
  • Ensure timely customs clearance and resolve shipment delays or regulatory issues.
  • Support supply chain operations by facilitating the efficient movement of imported goods.
  • Collaborate with Purchasing, Logistics, Finance, and Operations teams to support business objectives.

Government Agency Relations

  • Maintain professional working relationships with applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinate import compliance activities involving government agencies, including customs, food safety, consumer product safety, agriculture, and other relevant authorities.
Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in International Business, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Logistics, Finance, or a related field.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in customs compliance, international trade, logistics, or import operations.
  • Experience working with import regulations, tariff classifications, valuation requirements, and customs audits.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of import regulations and customs procedures.
  • Knowledge of tariff classification requirements.
  • Knowledge of country-of-origin regulations and marking requirements.
  • Knowledge of import documentation and recordkeeping requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, enterprise resource planning systems, and customs compliance software.

Preferred Certifications

  • Licensed Customs Broker (LCB).
  • Certified Customs Specialist (CCS).
  • Certified Export Specialist (CES).

The anticipated compensation range is  -  USD Annual. Actual compensation will be determined based on various factors including qualifications, education, experience, and location. The pay range is subject to change at any time dependent on a variety of internal and external factors.
