Automotive Technician – Job Overview
Responsible for performing specialized, skilled mechanical and technical work in the maintenance and repair of the Sheriff’s fleet vehicles and related equipment. Incumbents diagnose drivability issues, repair deficiencies, and verify proper performance under the general supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Manager.
Responsibilities- Trouble‑shoot and repair vehicles, ATVs, trailers, trucks and specialty vehicles.
- Schedule vehicles for routine maintenance.
- Drive the tow truck on and off call.
- Assist other units in towing disabled departmental cars and seized vehicles.
- Provide assistance during disasters such as hurricanes.
- Install radios and other equipment in vehicles and perform other assigned duties.
- Assist with shop cleanup and support the Fleet Maintenance Department as needed.
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma and a minimum of ten years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate’s Degree preferred.
- Must have prior experience with automotive repair and maintenance.
- ASE Certification required; additional certifications preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of electrical systems, engines, suspension, and troubleshooting.
- Experience working independently with a majority of the time without direct supervision.
Tasks performed both inside and outside, requiring heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying heavy loads. Work conditions are generally stable.
