Job Description

Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) is seeking to hire Regional Supervisors for summer 2026 to support the day-to-day operations of AWI’s flagship Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Spread Prevention Program. The Regional Supervisor position is responsible for the supervision, training, support, and evaluation of Watercraft Inspection Stewards within their assigned region.

Hours and Pay

Regional Supervisors work 8 hours per day, up to 40 hours per week, from May 22 – September 7, 2026. Weekend and holiday work is required. Additional work may be available through October 12, 2026, contingent on funding availability. Regional Supervisors are paid an hourly rate starting at $22.50 per hour. As this position requires extensive driving, mileage will be reimbursed at the current AWI rate per mile for work-related activities.

Supervisors are required to attend a paid, multi-day online training from May 11-14 and assist in the facilitation of an in-person training held on the campus of Paul Smith’s College from May 18-21.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the supervision, training, support, and evaluation of Watercraft Inspection Stewards within their assigned region in collaboration with year-round staff.
  • Provide oversight of approximately 10-15 Watercraft Inspection Stewards located at remote locations, five days per week, including all weekends and holidays in all weather conditions.
  • Support seasonal staff by providing clear direction and communication while providing feedback and assisting in staff training and coaching.
  • Travel to various work locations daily to support the needs of seasonal staff, reinforce program goals, and monitor and evaluate staff performance.
  • Provide coverage as a Watercraft Inspection Steward when needed, which includes interacting with the boating public to inspect and/or decontaminate watercrafts.
  • Promote aquatic invasive species spread prevention measures, and collect data via tablet computer.
  • Provide oversight to ensure proper set up and cleanliness of work spaces.
  • Assist in the trouble shooting of mechanical issues of hot water pressure washers.
  • Communicate with AWI program staff regularly and provide administrative support as necessary, including timecard approvals and personnel reports.
  • Assist with resolving steward disciplinary issues, conflict management, employee coaching, and staff performance evaluation reports, as necessary.
  • Represent PSC, AWI, and the AIS spread prevention program to the public, lake associations, law enforcement officers, and media.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned to support AWI’s mission.
Qualifications:

Required
  • Interest in the mission of AWI and the work of the AIS spread prevention program.
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Strong communication skills, with prior experience working with a diverse public.
  • Ability to spend extended amount of time on your feet, bending, and crouching to reach under vessels.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and maneuver wheel mounted pressure washers and wastewater collection pads.
  • Comfortable working with privately-owned watercrafts and using high pressure hot water to decontaminate them (3000 psi, 140° Fahrenheit).
  • Driver’s license and driving record acceptable to PSC insurance carrier and AWI.
  • Applicants must have use of a dependable personal vehicle for transportation and shelter at work locations (mileage will be compensated).
  • Regular access to the internet to check timecards and upload data.
  • Ability to work all weekends & holidays from May 22 – September 7, 2026.
Qualifications:

Preferred
  • Academic degree, coursework, or experience in natural resources, environmental studies, environmental science, recreation, wildlife, or related fields.
  • Willingness to use a personal computer for timecard approvals and other administrative tasks.
  • Prior experience with an AIS spread prevention program.
  • Experience operating gasoline powered motorized equipment.
  • Familiarity with outdoor water-based recreation to include boating, skiing, fishing, paddling, swimming, wildlife viewing, etc.
