Position Summary: Children's Aid (CA), established in 1853, is one of New York City's leading child and family service organizations. Children's Aid is seeking a Mechanic to join a facilities repair team that maintains the functional, systematic, and operational aspects of the agency's 40+ facilities portfolio.

The Mechanic is part of Children's Aid's Assistant Director of Facilities Infrastructure's maintenance team. This team is responsible for the upkeep and continuous improvement of all 40 Children's Aid physical locations throughout five boroughs of New York City. Every site is unique; sites are owned, leased, or occupied in public locations such as DOE and NYCHA buildings and house different programs varying from Foster Care to Clinics, Education, Community Centers, and administrative offices.

The Mechanic will be part of a team of experienced and responsive mechanics who travel to various agency sites daily resolving emergency issues, major and minor repairs, and site improvements. The Mechanic will report to our Bronx Facilities office and be part of an experienced, fast-moving team. The Mechanic will bring their experience to the table but also have opportunities to gain experience on the job.

Duties
  • Understand and promote the organization's Mission, Vision, and Core Values to ensure alignment with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, perform preventive maintenance and modifications to buildings and equipment; this includes Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, Boilers, Pumps, Blowers, Carpentry, and other disciplines at all CA locations.
  • Perform duties as assigned by Lead Mechanic in accordance with maintenance work requests in a professional and timely fashion.
  • Ensure that all required tools and supplies are brought to the work site for the jobs as is detailed on all projects and assignments.
  • Adheres to all safety and housekeeping policies to maintain a safe and clean working environment in the performance of maintenance tasks.
  • Maintains effective communication with supervisors; regularly estimates the amount of time and products needed in a project, provides regular status updates on project and effectively closes out work assignments. Advises when a job is completed or if additional support is needed to complete a specific task.
  • Identifies life safety/compliance/potential repair issues or potential problems that may arise and communicates for corrective actions to be taken.
  • Maintains a level of cleanliness and organization within the maintenance shop and maintenance vehicles.
  • Communicates with co-workers and shares experiences and knowledge to further enhance and strengthen the team's abilities to address and successfully manage future situations. Contributes to knowledge base.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED, Facilities Management course of study, preferred.
  • Experience in facilities repair and maintenance, preferably in a community center or school.
  • Valid, clean driver's license.
  • Experience with aging building, older infrastructure.
  • Good verbal communication skills. Must be able to read and write.
  • Good computer skills; ability to close out a work ticket, email communication. Ability to write a status report.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Effective, active listening skills. Organizational and critical thinking skills.
  • Working knowledge of all applicable Department of Building (DOB) Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), DOH, and other regulatory agencies.
Key Competencies
  • Participate in offered trainings, workshops, In-Service days, and/or All-Staff conferences.
  • Maintain certification requirements and proof of attendance in professional activities.
  • Adhere to all state and city licensing requirements and CPR/first aid certification.
  • Maintain a healthy and safe work environment in the performance of all assigned tasks.
