About Us

The West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing, Inc. (WSFSSH) is a community-based organization responding to the need for low-cost housing. Our mission is to provide safe, affordable housing with supportive services within a residential setting which enhances the independence and dignity of each person. WSFSSH develops, manages, and provides social services in housing for low-income persons, especially those who are older, who have experienced homelessness and who live with mental illness.

Job Summary

West Side Federation is seeking a skilled and reliable Handyman to join our team! The ideal candidate will perform a variety of maintenance, repair, and housekeeping tasks to provide a clean and safe environment for residents of WSFSSH with the goal of enabling senior residents to live safely and as independently as possible.

Responsibilities
  • In coordination with building super, or as directed, prepare vacant apartments for occupancy
  • Assist with painting and light repairs
  • Assist in special projects (for example: stripping and waxing floors)
  • Assist with electrical repairs, including troubleshooting and replacing fixtures as necessary
  • Complete residential painting projects with precision and attention to detail
  • Perform general maintenance and repairs on residential properties, ensuring all work meets safety standards
  • Wear the company’s uniform and/or adhere to the dress code policy, and always maintain a neat and clean appearance
Other Responsibilities
  • Work as a member of a team to establish and maintain a high level of care and respect for and communication with senior residents
  • Work cooperatively with other staff members
  • Share information about resident progress, needs, and problems with other staff in accordance with WSFSSH Confidentiality Policy
  • Attend training sessions and conferences as required for enhancement of job skills
  • Implement emergency procedures as necessary
  • Submit all required reports in a complete and timely manner
  • Assist with other duties as directed
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong maintenance skills and experience
  • Able to work in a multicultural and diverse environment
  • Proven experience with plumbing and electrical systems
  • Ability to work with hardware tools and power equipment
  • Extremely organized and a good communicator
  • Detail-oriented and an aptitude for problem solving
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, highly preferred
  • Collaborate with team members to lead projects and ensure timely completion of tasks
Required and Preferred Education, Experience, and Credentials
  • High School Diploma or GED; in lieu of GED, 4 years in a relevant handyman and/or maintenance position required
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working with a senior population and dependent individuals
  • Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated work experience as a handy person and building maintenance
  • Able to perform job responsibilities
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to stand, walk, lean, bend, manage stairs for extended periods across multiple buildings. Must maneuver in small spaces, kneel, crouch, climb ladders, and lift a minimum of 30 lbs or more as needed.
