Maintenance And Grounds Associate

Portledge School was founded in 1965 and is located on the beautiful North Shore of Long Island. Approximately fifty minutes (28 miles) from NYC by train, Portledge is nestled on a pastoral 63-acre tree-lined campus that is known for its cherry blossoms in spring. Enrolling approximately 525 students in grades PN-12, Portledge offers a competitive college preparatory program in a warm, inclusive community.

Portledge is seeking an experienced Maintenance and Grounds Associate to join our Facilities team. Responsibilities will include developing an athletic field maintenance plan ensuring all fields are in top shape, assisting with maintenance-related projects on campus including mail delivery, set up and breakdown of events, general repair and maintenance, and painting. This position must also be available during inclement weather for snow removal and other emergencies as necessary.

This is a full-time, 12-month staff position working a schedule of 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM and reporting to the Director of Facilities.

Required Responsibilities:
  • Groundskeeping & Outdoor Maintenance
    • Mow, trim, weed grounds, and maintain walking paths
    • Clean and maintain tennis courts and common outdoor spaces
    • Perform seasonal landscaping tasks including planting, mulching, snow removal and leaf removal
    • Assist with setup and takedown for outdoor events
    • Willingness and ability to respond to snow, ice and other related weather conditions as needed, including outside of standard working hours, to ensure fields, courts, and facilities are safe and playable
  • General Building Maintenance:
    • Assist with school repairs and event setups as required by Director of Facilities including but not limited to painting, fixture replacements, carpentry
    • Assist with basic plumbing and electrical tasks under supervision and as needed
    • Serve as the school's lead on interior and exterior painting projects, including surface prep, patching, priming, and finish work
    • Perform basic carpentry repairs and builds (e.g., trim, shelving, door and cabinet repair, minor structural fixes)
    • Prepare and set up spaces for painting and carpentry work, including furniture moves and protective coverings, and restore areas afterward
    • Monitor and report building maintenance issues or hazards
    • Maintain and organize storage and utility areas
    • Maintain common indoor areas
    • Assist with moving furniture, setting up for indoor events,
    • Work in all areas of facilities repair and maintenance as assigned, including but not limited to trash collection, clean up, campus mail distribution and general operations support
    • Ensures that all safety concerns are communicated with urgency and that steps are taken to protect the community from the concern
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in field maintenance, groundskeeping, landscaping, facility maintenance
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Self motivated, dependable and detail oriented
  • Valid Driver's license
  • Available to work occasional weekends and evenings

Compensation: $26.50-$28.50 per hour, full time, benefits eligible
