The Deputy Director of Communications is a senior position responsible for supporting the strategy and execution of the Council’s publications, multimedia, events, and communications activities. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Deputy Director oversees content production and promotion, audience mapping and community engagement, and editorial standards across the Council’s core issue areas, including applied ethics, peace and security, emerging technology, migration, and climate change.
This role is designed for an experienced content creator, storyteller, and manager who brings exceptional judgment, deep intellectual curiosity, attention to detail, and accountability to complex global-scale work.
Content Production & Promotion:
- Engage with Council subject-matter experts (staff, fellows, guests, journal contributors) to distill key insights, unlock new narrative opportunities, and produce thought‑leadership content for public consumption.
- Coordinate with and support the Council’s Communications team in the production and promotion of content across owned platforms, including editorial, digital, audio, video, and social media.
- Ensure content is accurate, accessible, timely, and aligned with institutional standards and priorities.
- Innovate on content creation to ensure best‑in‑class storytelling that drives engagement and opens pathways to new communities for the Council.
- Work across issue areas, including emerging technology, climate change, migration, and peace and security, to support the translation of complex ethical issues into accessible public‑facing content.
Institutional Coordination:
- Coordinate with senior staff across departments, including Programs, Development, Ethics & International Affairs journal, and the Office of the President.
- Support alignment between communications activities, fundraising initiatives, editorial calendars, and executive‑level messaging.
- Manage and mentor a team of direct reports and collaborate with the Director of Communications on the construction and tracking of the department’s annual budget.
Audience Strategy & Distribution:
- Support audience mapping and targeting efforts across owned channels: website, CRM/email, social media.
- Implement publication and promotion approaches that connect content to priority audiences in policy, academia, media, and civil society.
- Work with the Council’s digital team to monitor performance metrics and audience engagement data to inform tactical adjustments and quarterly strategic reviews.
Editorial & Brand Standards:
- Apply and maintain the Council’s editorial guidelines and brand standards across content and owned ecosystems.
- Work with the Council’s editor and program teams to conduct editorial review and quality control to ensure consistency of voice, tone, and accuracy.
- Streamline senior review and distribution processes for high‑visibility content across Programs, Development, and the Office of the President.
Community Engagement:
- Support efforts to cultivate and maintain an engaged global community (virtual and in person) around the Council’s core issue areas.
- Assist with engagement strategies that connect content, events, and digital programming.
- Engage professionally as a representative of the Council with global audiences across digital platforms and in‑person forums.
