The Alliance for a Greater New York is a longstanding alliance of labor and community organizations united for a just and sustainable New York. ALIGN works at the intersection of economy, environment, and equity to make change and build movement. Our model addresses the root causes of economic injustice by forging strategic alliances among community and labor, shaping the public debate through strategic communications, and developing policy solutions that make impact.
Formed in 2011, ALIGN helped rebuild NYC after Hurricane Sandy, bringing career jobs to impacted workers; won a Walmart-free NYC and defeated Amazon’s bid to build a new NYC headquarters; won unprecedented policies cleaning up NYC’s dirty buildings and commercial waste industry; helped pass the nation-leading NY Climate Act, mandating zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050; passed worker safety legislation including warehouse worker protections and airborne illness workplace health standards;
and in 2023, won a higher New York minimum wage that keeps up with the cost of living.
ALIGN seeks a talented, motivated, and dedicated coalition organizer to join our team as a Campaigns Director. This leadership position will report to the Executive Director, and will both supervise the organizing staff and play a lead role in setting direction and providing oversight for all of ALIGN’s coalition work and campaigns.
Responsibilities- Campaigns Development & Strategy:Leads the development of local and statewide organizing efforts including visioning, planning, and strategy development in conjunction with movement allies. The primary focus will be to grow our campaigns which bring together economic justice, climate justice, and labor partners towards unified political power across New York City and State. The Campaigns Director will lead a team of staff and organizational partners to effectively implement campaign plans to win legislative and policy victories by setting and consistently achieving yearly, quarterly, and weekly goals as well as responding to campaign flow, stakeholders’ and internal priorities to adapt plans effectively.
To achieve these goals, the Campaigns Director will manage public education, advocacy tactics, and action/event coordination. - Policy Advocacy :
Leads and drives ALIGN’s political organizing strategy for climate and worker justice policy demands by coordinating research and other needs among staff and allies, and directing external strategies such as actions and mobilizations. - Staff Supervision & Development: Supervises campaign staff via weekly supervision meetings, quarterly plans, and performance management, and provides mentorship to support relationship building, skill development, and campaign creativity. Also collaborates with the Executive Director and leads the team to maintain and advance an organizational culture that supports work/life balance, fosters positive staff relations, and ensures that staff members receive the evaluation, training, support, supervision, and leadership development that they need to succeed.
- Alliance-Building: Strengthens and grows our coalitions and our longstanding alliances through broad-based institutional and individual relationship-building and maintenance. Builds the leadership and mobilization capacity of ALIGN’s community and labor allies.
- Organizational Relationships: Serves as ALIGN ambassador with other institutions, the press, and the general public; proactively positions ALIGN and advances its reputation in the fields in which it works. Ensures coordination and cultivation of key institutional and political relationships across ALIGN team. Models the ability to deal with conflicts calmly, constructively, effectively, and in a timely manner.
The Campaigns Director should be accountable and accessible, a proven leader on campaigns, a good listener, politically savvy, and personally well organized.
