Exterminator, Bureau of Veterinary and Pest Control Services

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Division of Environmental Health seeks an Exterminator L-I for its Bureau of Veterinary and Pest Control Services.

The role involves inspecting premises, investigating infestation complaints, and determining the appropriate method of extermination. Responsibilities also include baiting areas according to protocol, applying rodenticide doses, maintaining extermination schedules, recording operations, reporting results, instructing the public on safety, inspecting demolition worksites, and operating city vehicles and equipment safely.

• Inspect premises and investigate complaints of infestation to determine appropriate extermination methods.
• Properly bait areas according to protocol and strictly apply rodenticide doses as labeled.
• Maintain an extermination schedule of bait applications in accordance with protocol and label directions.
• Keep records via a computer of exterminating operations and prepare reports.
• Instruct the public on safety and precautions before and after pesticide applications.
• Inspect demolition worksites to confirm adequate pre-demolition rodent control procedures have been performed.
• Use and maintain all appropriate city-issued equipment, materials, and clothing.
• Attend all required trainings and meetings.
• Operate city vehicle safely and in compliance with State laws.

• Highly organized with strong teamwork abilities.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Experience with computers is a plus.

• Valid certificate as a Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator for Industrial, Institutional, Structural, and Rodent Control (7A) issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, maintained throughout employment.
• Valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver License, maintained throughout employment.
• For Assignment Level II: minimum two years of full‑time practical experience in preparation and use of insecticides, rodenticides, baits, traps, and related chemicals/equipment for extermination.
• For Assignment Level III: minimum two years of full‑time practical experience as above plus one year of full‑time supervisory experience, totaling three years.
• Additional experiential requirements as outlined by the Department.
