Responsible for setting up, programming, and operating manual and CNC lathes and mills to produce high‑precision prototype and production parts. Performs equipment maintenance, assists in training others, and recommends process improvements.
Responsibilities- Operate CNC milling machines, manual and CNC lathes, and other metalworking equipment
- Consult with Optics Shop Manager and Engineers on job details and specifications
- Produce high‑precision prototype parts with minimal input, making corrections as needed
- Use blueprints and job orders to ensure dimensions and tolerance levels meet specifications
- Analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, set up and operate machine tools
- Create tools and fixtures, selecting proper fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth of cut, and cutting tools
- Write CNC programs, determine tooling, and sequence operations for machined parts
- Assist in training personnel and recommend changes to improve processes
- Work independently and meet production deadlines
- Three or more years as a CNC machinist
- Two or more years of CNC programming experience
- One or more years of prototype machinist work with mills and lathes
- Proficiency in CNC programming software and operating manual lathes and mills
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
- Strong mathematical skills (algebra, trigonometry, geometry, conversions)
- Detail‑oriented, organized, and able to prioritize work under time pressure
- Good judgment and independent problem‑solving skills
- Ability to measure and inspect parts as needed
- Technical machinist training preferred
- Operate CNC mills, lathes, drill press, hand tools, grinders, saws, precision fabrication equipment, and measuring tools
- Lift, lower, push, pull, or move equipment and materials up to 100 lbs with assistance and up to 50 lbs may frequently be required
- Stand for extended periods while operating machinery
- Work in a noisy environment; use hearing protection when necessary
- Wear eye protection and gloves as required
- Exposed to minimal fumes from alcohol and acetone
- Competitive salary: $48,000 – $72,000, depending on experience
