POSITION SUMMARYSet up, programs and operates the manual and CNC lathes and CNC mills, performs high precision prototype work and production work, and performs equipment maintenance as needed. Must also be familiar with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures, rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.

This role is a B-Shift/2nd Shift Opening with hours of 2:00pm-10:30pm

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Machines various parts using the CNC milling machines, manual and CNC lathes, and other metalworking machines

Consults with Optics Shop Manager and Engineers on job details and specifications

Machines high precision prototype parts with minimal input, making corrections as needed

Uses blueprints and/or job orders to ensure the proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished product

Analyzes a variety of specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools

Makes tools and fixtures needed to produce parts, ensures the proper fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth of cut, and cutting tools to be used Writes CNC programs with programming software, determines machines, sets up tooling, and sequences of operations necessary to produce machined parts

Assists in training others as needed

Recommends changes as needed

Must be able to decipher different types of material and their properties

Minimal grinding experience

Perform other duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESFluent in CNC programming software

Able to operate a manual lathe and mill Ability to read and comprehend blueprints and sketches

Perform algebraic, trigonometry, geometry, conversions and complicated mathematical calculations

Demonstrate a thorough knowledge in the operations and maintenance of CNC mills and manual and CNC lathes

Demonstrate a thorough knowledge in the operation and maintenance of manual mills and/or lathes, drill press, and hand tools

Demonstrate and practice a detail-oriented approach to work. Organize and prioritize work, Use reasoning and good judgment

Work effectively with time and production restrictions. Work without direct supervision

Must be able to measure and inspects as neededCREDENTIALS AND EXPERIENCE Three or more years as a CNC Machinist Two or more years CNC programming experience

One or more years technical experience with prototype machinist work using mills and lathes

One or more years Technical Machinist trainingSPECIAL REQUIREMENTSWilling to work extended hours when necessary
