Role Description This full-time Tool Maker Apprentice role is an on-site position based at Dayton Industries, Inc. in Bronx, NY. The apprentice supports experienced tool makers by assisting with the fabrication, repair, and maintenance of dies, jigs, fixtures, and other tooling used in metal stamping operations. Day-to-day tasks may include operating basic shop equipment under supervision, measuring and inspecting components, organizing tools and materials, and helping to troubleshoot tooling issues on the production floor.

The role also involves learning to read technical drawings, following safety procedures, and participating in training to gradually take on more complex tool-making responsibilities. The apprentice is expected to work closely with supervisors and team members to ensure production tools meet quality and performance standards.

Qualifications

  • Ability to learn and apply basic mechanical and fabrication concepts, including measuring, cutting, drilling, and assembly.
  • Interest in tool making, machining, or metalworking, with a willingness to develop skills in operating shop equipment (e.g., saws, grinders, drill presses) under guidance.
  • Capacity to read or learn to read technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications and follow detailed instructions accurately.
  • Strong attention to detail, quality-focused mindset, and commitment to maintaining safety standards in an industrial environment.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with tool makers, supervisors, and production staff.
  • Basic math skills and comfort working with measurements, tolerances, and inspection tools such as calipers and micrometers.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or coursework in machining, manufacturing technology, or related fields is a plus.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, handle tools and materials, and work safely in a manufacturing setting.
