Position Summary The Diamond Turning Machinist is responsible for the setup, operation, and optimization of ultra-precision diamond turning equipment used to manufacture precision optical components. This role supports both prototype and production manufacturing, requiring a high level of attention to detail, technical expertise, and the ability to maintain exceptionally tight tolerances.
Essential Responsibilities Set up and operate diamond turning machines to produce precision optical components
Manufacture mold inserts, optical lenses, and other ultra-precision components in accordance with engineering specifications.
Inspect finished components using optical and metrology equipment to verify dimensional and surface quality requirements
Perform visual inspection, cleaning, and handling of optical components
Document inspection results, production data, and other manufacturing records as needed
Monitor machining processes and adjust machine parameters as needed to maintain product quality
Set up, inspect, and properly handle diamond cutting tools, such as Innolite machinery
Perform vacuum chuck setup, part fixturing, spindle balancing, and other machine preparation activities.
Perform routine machine maintenance and cleaning
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in accordance with company standards.
Additional Responsibilities Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and special projects as assigned.
Collaborate with engineering, quality, and manufacturing personnel to troubleshoot process and product issues.
Utilize Microsoft Office applications and other production software as required.
Communicate effectively with team members and leadership regarding production status and technical concerns.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
Experience & Skills Two or more years of experience in diamond turning, ultra-precision machining, optical manufacturing, or a related field preferred.
Experience with setup and operation of ultra-precision diamond turning equipment.
Working knowledge of optical metrology and inspection techniques.
Experience machining precision optical components with tight dimensional and surface finish requirements.
Knowledge of diamond tool geometry, tool handling practices, and machining parameter optimization.
Familiarity with vacuum chuck fixturing, spindle balancing, and precision machine setup procedures.
Experience with diffractive, aspheric, and/or freeform optical surfaces preferred.
