COMMUNITY COORDINATOR - 56058

The Transportation Planning and Management Division (TP&M) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division's responsibilities include planning street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.

TP&M is seeking a motivated candidate to support creative communications and engagement efforts within the Public Engagement Group (PEG), a critical outreach support team for the TP&M Division. PEG supports Vision Zero safety initiatives cited in the agency's Strategic Plan and NYC Streets Plan and has been critical to the agency's public engagement strategy. PEG also provides capacity for public input in the development of Street Improvement Projects (SIPs) and supports the explicit goals of Project-Based Outreach and Public Awareness.

Under the direction of the Creative Communications Lead, the Public Engagement Innovation and Design Specialist (PEIDS) will support the development of project-specific collateral and creative engagement strategies across a range of initiatives.

This role combines design with opportunities to explore innovative approaches to public engagement, including print, digital, and interactive tools. The candidate will work closely with Project Managers (PMs), internal teams, and PEG leadership to translate technical and programmatic information into clear, visually engaging content, while assisting in the maintenance of templates, internal tools, and reporting materials. The role also includes occasional documentation of field outreach through photography and short-form video content.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in graphic design for print and digital platforms, developing templates or visual systems, prototyping creative outreach tools, or producing photography and video content. An interest in exploring innovative public engagement methods, including interactive tools, digital landing pages, branded items, or pilot campaign materials, is highly desirable. The ideal candidate is a collaborative problem solver who values attention to detail, can manage multiple projects, and is eager to contribute creative ideas to enhance outreach effectiveness.

An ability to research emerging trends in visual communication and public engagement is also valued.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
  • Preferred Skills

Strong graphic design skills, including experience with Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent design tools. Experience designing across print, digital, and interactive formats. Understanding of branding, accessibility standards, and design systems. Ability to translate creative direction into effective outputs. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Strong collaboration and communication skills able to work effectively with leadership, content teams, and PMs.

Interest in exploring innovative engagement strategies, including prototyping, pilot campaigns, and new media formats.
