Description

Join the team at Farrar, Straus, Giroux (FSG). We’re looking for an editorial assistant who has a broad range of interests and excellent communication and organizational skills who will work closely with the Editor in Chief, supporting all aspects of running the editorial department as well as publishing a range of fiction and nonfiction.

A cover letter is required to apply for this role. Additionally, a writing sample of 350–500 words must be provided to be considered for the position.

The ideal candidate will be interested in the life of the book from start to finish– a thoughtful and efficient reader with a passion for bringing contemporary literature and innovative ideas to a broad audience. They should be a curious self-starter who enjoys working independently as well as collaboratively with a team. Problem‑solving, time management, devotion to follow‑through, confidence in communication, attention to detail, and top‑notch organizational skills are a must.

Proficiency in a second language is highly prized. Strong copywriting skills are essential. Bring enthusiasm, a can‑do spirit, and fresh ideas!

What you’ll do:

  • Coordinate workflow and administration on a high‑volume, fast‑paced editor’s desk.
  • Manage scheduling and assist the EIC with departmental administration.
  • Act as a liaison between editorial and production, design, marketing, publicity and sales departments.
  • Initiate and respond to correspondence with authors and agents at all stages of the publishing process.
  • Guide manuscripts through the production process.
  • Read and evaluate book proposals and manuscripts on submission.
  • Offer comments on manuscripts in progress.
  • Draft copy for jackets, catalog, presentations, and outreach to likely supporters.

What you’ll bring:

  • Active organizational skills and attention to detail, committed follow‑up.
  • Facility with a range of writing.
  • Project management experience.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and judgment.
  • Experience multi‑tasking and working with a team.
  • Passionate engagement with a wide range of literary and popular culture.
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Strong work ethic, initiative, and an eagerness to learn.
  • Time working in a busy office and/or a fast‑paced environment.
  • Prior work in publishing or related industry helpful, but not required.
  • Seeing independent projects through from inception to completion.
  • Foreign language proficiency (primarily reading) a plus.

The salary range for this role is $50,000.

This position is classified as remote but is tied to our New York, NY office located at 120 Broadway. Employment is subject to New York State tax withholding under applicable regulations.
