The Center for Justice Innovation centers safety and racial justice in partnership with communities, courts, and the people most impacted. Our local justice centers, like the Brownsville Community Justice Center, create a safer, stronger future by investing in youth, transforming public spaces, and reimagining justice.
About the Organization
The Center for Justice Innovation (the Center) is a community justice organization that centers safety and racial justice in partnership with communities, courts, and the people most impacted.
We believe that justice starts in the community and centers healing, equity, and empowerment. Because of that we combine deep local engagement with data-driven strategies to help design solutions that reduce incarceration, prevent violence, and strengthen trust between people and systems. Our work focuses on four main areas:
Building Justice in the Court System;
Women, Girls, and Gender Justice;
Housing Justice; and Investing in Communities.
Our Justice Centers are the local hubs where our vision of investing in communities comes to life, where residents can define and build safety on their own terms. Our Justice Centers aim to co-create safe, vibrant and thriving communities by partnering with youth and residents to invest in violence prevention, youth opportunity, neighborhood infrastructure, economic mobility, and community healing. These five strategies implemented holistically address root causes of community violence and criminal legal problems to create sustainable change at the community level.
The Brownsville Community Justice Center (BCJC) in Brownsville, Brooklyn works to create a safer, more equitable Brownsville through community-driven public safety initiatives, youth opportunity, and economic mobility efforts. Our vision is to support the Brownsville community to become a thriving place where local ownership, community-led investment, and youth opportunity can flourish. The Justice Center works toward this vision by focusing on community safety, youth opportunity, neighborhood investment, economic mobility, and community healing.
Programs like B Live, Youth Leadership Council, and Brownsville Girls Collaborative provide spaces to lead, heal, and create. In partnership with community leaders, BCJC has helped transform areas like Belmont Avenue into lively community spaces that have sparked local investment, created job opportunities for youth, and inspired residents to take part in community-driven projects. The BCJC operating budget is currently $3.5m.
