About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability. Through mentorship, literacy development, social-emotional learning, creative expression, and storytelling, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people are seen, respected, and valued. MAP’s newsletters are a key storytelling and community-building tool—connecting supporters, volunteers, families, and partners to the impact, voices, and values of our work.

Purpose

of the Role

The Newsletter Writer translates MAP’s mission, programs, and stories into clear, engaging, and human-centered written updates. This role focuses on crafting newsletters that inform, inspire, and strengthen connection—highlighting youth impact, program milestones, upcoming events, and community voices.

The Newsletter Writer ensures that MAP’s communications feel warm, authentic, and accessible, while remaining aligned with organizational tone, values, and goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Write engaging monthly and/or biweekly newsletters for MAP audiences
  • Translate program updates, impact data, and stories into accessible narratives
  • Highlight youth-centered stories, volunteer voices, and community milestones
  • Collaborate with program staff, leadership, and communications leads
  • Maintain a consistent voice aligned with MAP’s mission and values
  • Edit and proofread content for clarity, tone, and accuracy
  • Support calls to action (events, volunteering, giving, awareness) when needed
  • Ensure language is trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and inclusive
  • Maintain content calendars and draft timelines as assigned
  • Check and respond to emails daily, with responses within 48 hours
  • Take responsibility for continuous improvement by incorporating feedback
Qualifications
  • Experience in newsletter writing, communications, journalism, or storytelling
  • Strong ability to write clearly, warmly, and concisely for diverse audiences
  • Comfort translating impact and program information into narrative form
  • Sensitivity to trauma-informed and culturally responsive communication
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Commitment to ethical, inclusive, and mission-driven storytelling
Bonus (Not Required)
  • Experience writing for nonprofits or community organizations
  • Familiarity with email platforms (Mailchimp, Constant Contact, etc.)
  • Experience with storytelling for donors, volunteers, or families
  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities (Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred)
Commitment
  • Volunteer role, approximately 3–6 hours per week (flexible based on newsletter cycle)
  • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
  • Remote collaboration via Google Meet, with optional NYC-based participation
  • MAP prioritizes clarity, consistency, and respect for creative labor
