Rollerskating Volunteer Needed at Riverbank State Park

US serves tens of thousands of New Yorkers each year facing poverty, homelessness, and life with disabilities. We create pathways to rich and productive lives through high-quality housing, employment, skills-building, treatment, recovery, food security, and eviction prevention services.

Participants of our 149th Day Habilitation and South Bronx Day Habilitation are coming together to learn to roller skate. These day habs are skill building programs where people with intellectual/development disabilities receive training for daily living skills, such as communication and self-preservation, community awareness, independent living and pre-vocational skills. In May to August, they are learning to go roller skating! Volunteers would go to Riverbank State Park Wednesdays from 10am to 11:30am and assist the coach in teaching 10-15 people (with staff and other volunteers) in the fundamentals of roller skating.

Volunteer must bring their own skates and protective equipment for themselves.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in coaching 10-15 people in the fundamentals of roller skating
  • Be sensitive to people with intellectual/development
  • Be available on Wednesdays from 10am to 11:30am at Riverbank State Park
Qualifications
  • Have experience with individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities
  • Willingness to learn
  • Coaching experience
