The Hebrew Free Loan Society (HFLS) advances financial stability and upward mobility for lower-income New Yorkers of all backgrounds by making safe, affordable interest-free loans.

HFLS is the largest nonprofit interest-free lender in the United States. We have been making loans based on financial need to borrowers of all backgrounds since 1892. Our repayment rate is 99%, the result of a unique lending model that relies on guarantors to prevent default. As our loans are repaid, the capital is lent out again and again, helping more people and multiplying impact over time.

This year, HFLS will lend approximately $35 million to nearly 2,000 households, and we strive to help more people every year.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Individual Giving Officer will be responsible for managing and growing a portfolio of approximately 100
-150 mid-level donors accounting for approximately $500,000 in fundraising revenue. This position plays a key role in identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors to support HFLS’s mission. The officer in collaboration with the Director of Development will design and implement strategic moves management plans, oversee donor cultivation events, and help build a strong pipeline of future major donors.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 100-150 individual donors with giving capacity at the mid-level ($1,000-$9,999).
  • Develop personalized engagement and solicitation strategies for each donor.
  • Implement moves management to advance relationships through the donor cycle.
  • Identify donors with potential to increase giving and create strategies to elevate their support level.
  • Partner with the Director of Development to align donor strategy and coordinate engagement efforts.
  • Identify opportunities to involve the CEO in cultivation or solicitation of major gifts, ensuring a seamless handoff and collaborative approach.

Donor Identification and Research

  • Identify and qualify new prospects to build a strong donor pipeline.
  • Conduct research to understand donor interests, capacity, and connections.

Cultivation and Stewardship

  • Plan and execute 2-3 cultivation and stewardship events annually, ensuring a high-quality donor experience.
  • Provide consistent, thoughtful stewardship through personalized communication, updates, and recognition.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development to develop compelling donor materials.

Fundraising and Solicitation

  • Develop and implement annual individual giving strategies to meet fundraising goals.
  • Solicit gifts through personalized outreach.
  • Track donor activity and progress using Salesforce.
THE CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate takes a donor-centered approach to their work and is both self-directed and a team player, able to function well independently and in a dynamic, collaborative team environment.

Must Haves:

  • Experience managing a donor portfolio and moving donors through the giving cycle.
  • Understanding how to plan, prioritize, and advance donor relationships intentionally.
  • Comfortable asking for gifts and closing donations.
  • Experience using a CRM to track activity, manage portfolio, and ensure follow-through.
  • Capable of identifying, qualifying, and building a pipeline of new donors.
  • Connects authentically to HFLS’s mission and can clearly communicate impact to inspire giving.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
POSITION DETAILS

Reports To: Director of Development
Type: Full-time/Exempt
Start Date: July/August 2026 (flexible)
Location: Greater NYC area. Must be able to work from HFLS’s midtown Manhattan office at least one day per week.
Compensation: $80,000-$90,000 per year depending on experience.
