The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is hiring a Food and Agriculture Assistant to support farm operations and garden projects at New Roots Farm (Bronx) and Garden (Queens).
Job OverviewUnder the supervision of the Food and Agriculture Coordinator, this part‑time, temporary role (through September 30, 2026) focuses on day‑to‑day farm operations, site maintenance, training, community engagement, and production support across both sites.
Major Responsibilities- Maintain the farm and garden sites, including weeding, watering, filling water tanks, trash pickup, and organization of tool sheds and greenhouses.
- Create planting schedules and crop plans, and coordinate seed saving for the garden’s seed library.
- Assist with natural pest management and harvest/distribution activities.
- Coordinate work‑day activities with community members, interns, garden members, volunteers, and staff.
- Support the farmers market and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program; supervise Market Stewards and apprentices.
- Supervise Land Stewards, interns, and volunteers at both sites.
- Track and record project metrics (Excel, Farming Concrete, ETO) to assess effectiveness.
- Develop and maintain community partnerships and outreach programs, including workshops that benefit IRC clients.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- Passion for food sovereignty and food justice.
- 1–2 years of experience in sustainable agriculture, urban farming, or related projects.
- Experience in community organizing, engagement, or training with disadvantaged populations.
- Ability to work in a diverse setting with a varied client base.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Fluent in English; bilingual Spanish, Bengali, or Filipino preferred.
- Physical ability to carry out gardening and farm activities.
- Independent, self‑starter with strong problem‑solving and multitasking abilities.
- Team collaboration and stakeholder management at all levels.
- Proactive change management and positive attitude.
Pay Rate: $22.50 – $23.15 per hour (varies by location, experience, and qualifications).
