As the nation's first and NYC's largest youth mentoring organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City (BBBS of NYC) connects generations of New Yorkers by matching a caring adult mentor, a Big, with a New York City youth, a Little. Through evidence-based, goal-centered, professional supporting programming, BBBS of NYC provides consistent support and guidance to matches that result in longer, stronger match relationships that advance the social-emotional development and academic progress of young people across the five boroughs.

SUMMARY:

The Director of Development will report to the Chief Corporate Officer and lead efforts to secure foundation, government, individual giving, and major donor support for the leading mentoring organization in the country.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead and oversee all aspects of fundraising strategy and execution, including individual giving, major gifts, institutional giving, and planned giving initiatives.
  • Develop and execute strategies to grow individual and major donor revenue to at least $1M annually, with ongoing assessment and refinement of annual fundraising goals.
  • Create and manage online fundraising campaigns using Classy/Go Fund Me .
  • Manage and strategically grow a portfolio of 60–75 major donor prospects, leading cultivation, engagement, and solicitation efforts to secure gifts of a minimum of $5,000.
  • Prospect research and identification:
  • Developing a regularly updated list of institutional funding prospects for circulation to the Board of Trustees for contact identification.
  • Tracking, developing strategies, preparing submissions, and follow-up on all contacts resulting from the Board list.
  • Retain and grow existing portfolio of foundation and government partnerships; steward and solicit prospects to secure and grow new funding.
  • Develop and execute strategies to grow institutional giving to at least $1M annually, with annual evaluation and expansion of revenue goals.
  • Manage complete grant cycle process: write high quality grant applications and proposals including budgets and prepare other materials as needed: reports, letters of intent, program briefs, etc.; manage submission process and follow-up.
  • Responsible for managing acknowledgements and recognition of gifts.
  • Develop personalized donor engagement strategies to strengthen long-term philanthropic relationships.
  • Track fundraising performance and donor engagement through CRM systems and provide regular progress updates.
  • Supervises Senior Manager of Institutional Giving.
  • Assist with other Development Department activities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 5-8 years experience of successful, proven fundraising experience with a focus on institutional giving and individual donor fundraising.
  • Proven success, cultivating and securing five- and six-figure gifts.
  • Superior writing and prospect research skills, with a proven track record of success
  • Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to engage donors, foundation partners, and organizational leadership.
  • Strong time-management skills and ability to work efficiently and effectively in a deadline-driven, fast-paced environment
  • Experience using CRM systems (such as Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge) to track donor engagement and fundraising activity.
  • Knowledge of the New York City philanthropic community.
  • Excellent computer skills: proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required; experience with Raiser’s Edge database and Classy/Go Fund Me  is preferred
