Strycker’s Bay Neighborhood Council is a grassroots, community-based organization serving the Upper West Side and Harlem. Our mission is to give families and children access to tools, resources, and knowledge that will empower them to break the cyclical nature of poverty and improve their quality of life. We serve as a neighborhood anchor that operates with an open door policy and with a staff that mirrors our community’s culture and lived experiences with an intimate knowledge of ongoing needs of low-income families, parents and children reaching for school success within a system and community not set up to meet their needs.

Our services include after school programming, tutoring, summer camp, youth workforce development, eviction prevention assistance, and family support. While the Upper West Side as a whole is viewed as affluent, there is significant and overlooked poverty and inequity within its diverse neighborhoods. In our community, 7% of residents are Black and 15% are Latino; there are more than 32,000 children under age 18;

11.4% of families live below the federal poverty level and 25% are food insecure. Most vulnerable children here face the steepest barriers to accessing local educational resources. In addition, New York retains its place as the most segregated state for Black students, and second most segregated for Latinos. Dual segregation of low-income Black and Latino students has worsened in the past 10 years, with poor outcomes for so many.

The SBNC Student Success Coordinator will establish access to the project for, and build engagement among, families and students working to resolve school safety crises, grades, discipline, promotion, and changes in school policy impacting students, schools, and the community; build strategies and skills to ensure families are equipped to access and advocate for the educational resources and supports their students need;

and improve access to educational and supportive resources for students by working with the community to identify, document, and address the barriers low‑income families face, and to access and create new opportunities for student success.
