Founded on December 30, 1863, The Woodlawn Cemetery is a historic 400-acre landmark located in the Bronx, New York. Established during the rural cemetery movement, Woodlawn has grown into one of the most historically significant cemeteries in the United States, with more than 310,000 individuals interred across its grounds. The cemetery is nationally recognized for its extraordinary collection of mausoleums, memorial sculpture, and funerary art.
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2011, Woodlawn continues to serve both as an active cemetery and a major cultural landscape, preserving the story of New York and the nation for future generations.
The Development and Events Associate supports the Conservancy's fundraising, membership, and public program efforts, reporting to the Director of Development and Programs. This role manages donor cultivation and stewardship, event and program logistics, and grant and communications support. The Associate also serves as a liaison across development, program, and communications functions, helping visitors, donors, and partners engage with Woodlawn's mission.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES(Management may amend or assign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time.)
- Manage donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.
- Greet and assist visitors with maps, directions, and locations of graves for family members.
- Be available to accompany VIP guests on tours of grounds and/or assist them with finding locations related to current Woodlawn initiatives.
- Manage online registration for programs and events.
- Generate correspondence for tour confirmations and follow up emails.
- Assist with cultivation and solicitation of new members and manage membership renewals.
- Manage fundraising database and records.
- Produce monthly e-newsletter and other periodic communications to maintain and build our audience.
- Maintain the development calendar.
- Become proficient in Woodlawn Search and other tools utilized within the organization.
- Assist with timely submission of compelling, well researched, well written, and well documented grant proposals.
- Assist with making contacts related to fundraising, such as reaching out to other agencies for letters of support.
- Contact funders as needed to obtain and update information.
- Write and submit progress reports to corporate and foundation funders.
- Identify new funding opportunities using research databases such as Donor Perfect, Candid, and Donor Search.
- Assist with annual Lot Owners Luncheon and Memorial Day Flagging.
- Support roster of public events, lectures, and concerts.
- Organize and support other development activities and events.
- Assist with preparation for meetings such as the Board Development Committee.
- Liaise with program staff to develop solid understanding of current programs, initiatives, and general history of the Cemetery.
- Serve as liaison for Bloomberg Connects and update app content as needed.
- Assist with content development for social media and the website.
- All other duties as assigned.
Required
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject required.
- Minimum of three years of experience in fundraising.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong organizational skills, and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required. Knowledge of Adobe required. Experience with Donor Perfect or similar CRM.
Preferred
- Master's degree in a relevant subject.
- Knowledge of American history, art and architecture, and historic preservation.
This position has no supervisory responsibility.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSAbility to walk cemetery grounds for tours and events, including uneven or outdoor terrain, and to lift up to 25 lbs for event setup materials. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
WORK ENVIRONMENTCombination of office environment and outdoor cemetery grounds, with exposure to weather during outdoor tours, events, and programs.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITSThe compensation range listed above is a good faith estimate of the pay offered for this position at the time of posting and reflects the role, location, and experience level required. Actual compensation will be determined based on relevant experience, qualifications, and internal equity. Benefits-eligible employees may participate in WLC's comprehensive benefits program.
