About the RoleA nonpartisan, independent New York City government agency focused on elections, voter engagement, and campaign finance transparency is hiring a Volunteer Coordinator to recruit, train, and manage volunteers who support direct voter engagement across the city. The agency's voter engagement initiative shares trustworthy election information and helps New Yorkers make a plan to vote, with a focus on communities that have historically had lower participation due to structural barriers.
Reporting to the Senior Outreach Manager, the Volunteer Coordinator plans, designs, and executes volunteer-supported engagement efforts for all NYC elections, typically beginning three to six months ahead of each cycle. Volunteers support voter registration drives, community events, canvassing, text banking, and other outreach activities.
What the Role Covers- Recruiting, screening, interviewing, onboarding, and placing volunteers to support outreach and Get-Out-The-Vote efforts
- Developing and delivering volunteer orientations, training tools, and curricula
- Providing ongoing coaching, supervision, and support to volunteers with clear expectations and meaningful assignments
- Managing volunteer scheduling, calendars, and placement across outreach stations and events
- Organizing and leading volunteer outreach and community events to increase voter participation
- Coordinating voter registration drives with staff, interns, partners, and volunteers
- Serving as liaison between the agency and community organizations, presenting on civic engagement opportunities and volunteer roles
- Maintaining volunteer records including applications, background checks, hours, and participation in CRM systems
- Tracking outreach efforts including event details, audience numbers, voter registrations, collateral distribution, and demographic reach
- Working with the Data team to ensure outreach and volunteer data is complete, accurate, and consistently maintained
- Validating volunteer hour contributions and providing periodic summaries of participation trends
- Bachelor's degree with at least 12 semester credits in business or public administration, computer science, economics, finance, statistics, or a closely related field, plus one year of relevant full-time experience; or a four-year high school diploma with five years of equivalent experience
- Knowledge of voter activation platforms such as VAN, Mobilize, or REACH
- Knowledge of volunteer recruitment, training, and management best practices
- Experience with CRM and data systems for accurate tracking and reporting
- Experience with event planning and program execution
- Skilled at engaging with members of the public in a professional, positive manner
- Ability to travel across the city via public transit and work outside standard hours during peak election season
- Previous experience with elections and voting work, especially in NYC
- Experience leading citywide or large-scale public engagement campaigns for voter mobilization
- Understanding of voter universe creation and targeting for nonpartisan engagement
- Proficiency in one or more of the agency's covered languages
