Nonprofit Fundraiser - $20/hr- Great for Students & Creatives
Brooklyn, NY, US
$20/hour guaranteed + bonuses | Full-Time & Part-Time | Brooklyn / NYC
Want work that builds your confidence, challenges you, and lets you talk about issues that actually matter?
Public Outreach is growing our NYC fundraising team.
We're looking for outgoing, curious people who want to make an impact while developing real-world skills in communication, fundraising, advocacy, and leadership.
This can be a great fit for students, recent graduates, performers, creatives, debaters, advocates, hospitality workers, and people looking to break into the nonprofit sector.
No fundraising experience is required. We provide paid training, ongoing coaching, and opportunities to grow.
What You'll Actually DoThis is face-to-face fundraising - not an office job.
You'll work throughout NYC with your team, speaking with members of the public about important nonprofit campaigns and inviting people to become monthly donors.
You'll:
- Start conversations with people you've never met
- Learn about the nonprofit campaign you're representing
- Turn complex issues into engaging, human conversations
- Tell stories and explain why the work matters
- Answer questions and handle objections
- Ask people directly to become monthly donors
- Work toward clear fundraising goals
- Practice your approach and receive regular coaching
You'll never fundraise alone. You'll work alongside a team, and your leaders have done this work themselves.
Talk About Issues That MatterDepending on your campaign, your conversations may involve:
- Humanitarian aid
- Civil liberties and human rights
- Environmental issues
- Global poverty and food insecurity
- Education and opportunity
- Support for children and families
- Communities affected by conflict and displacement
You don't need to arrive as an expert.
You do need to be curious, willing to learn, and comfortable having meaningful conversations about serious issues.
Flexible- But Reliable
We know students, performers, and creatives often need flexibility around classes, auditions, rehearsals, and other commitments.
We can work with that - but we also need consistency.
You must be able to commit to at least 3 full 7.5-hour shifts per week.
Shifts generally run 12:30 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Sunday
, with some variation in hours on weekends.
Full-time team members can work additional days.
This isn't a job where you can drop in for a few hours between classes or gigs. When you're scheduled, we need you for the full shift.
This Job Will Challenge YouYou'll hear "no" more often than "yes".
Fundraising takes resilience. You'll learn how to reset after rejection, adjust your approach, and confidently start the next conversation.
You'll also spend much of your shift walking, standing, and exploring NYC with your team.
And yes - this is outdoor work.
New York has real seasons. You'll experience heat, cold, wind, rain, and changing weather throughout the year.
We never send our teams out in unsafe conditions, and we provide practical support during difficult weather. But you should be prepared to dress appropriately and be comfortable working outdoors.
If you're looking for easy work where nobody measures your results, this probably isn't the job for you.
If you want a job that can make you a stronger communicator, more confident approaching people, and more resilient when things don't go your way, you may love it here.
This doesn't have to be just a student job.
Our leaders are promoted from within.
Many started as fundraisers themselves before moving into training, coaching, leadership, management, recruitment, and other opportunities.
You will build practical skills in:
- Public speaking
- Storytelling
- Community outreach
- Handling objections
- Receiving and applying feedback
- Leadership
This can be your entry point into the nonprofit sector - or the beginning of your career right here at Public Outreach.
People with backgrounds in theatre, performance, political science, debate, advocacy, student organizing, communications, hospitality, sales, and other public-facing work can do especially well here.
Students and recent grads from NYC schools including NYU, The New School, Pratt, Brooklyn College, Pace, Juilliard, and other colleges and universities are encouraged to apply.
What matters most isn't where you studied.
We're looking for people who are curious, prepared, resilient,…
