Position Summary

The WPPA Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing primary care services, including assessing, diagnosing, prescribing, treating and educating patients. Works closely with physicians and other clinicians in a team approach to patient care. May specialize in a specific type of clinical care, e.g. pediatrics, geriatrics.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors. Conducts patient rounds as necessary. Formulates and implements a therapeutic plan of care with physicians and staff. Writes in progress notes.
• Assesses daily plan of care and recommends actions in collaboration with the patient’s physician.
• Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory and diagnostic testing. Maintains contact with the ancillary testing areas for follow up.
• Performs regular medication reviews for patients and modifies orders as necessary.
• Recommends appropriate consults as needed.
• Communicates with patient/family regarding plan of care and discharge plan.
• Interacts with third party insurers regarding plan of care and continued stay.
• Participates as needed in finalizing a safe discharge plan. Completes all required documentation.
• Assists staff in moving patient along clinical pathway. Serves as a resource to the discharge planning staff.
• Inpatient rounding – assist physicians with pre-op and post-op patient assessments.
• Assist physicians as requested with appropriate surgical procedures.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements

• Master’s degree in nursing from an accredited school.
• Current NYS license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.
• Current NYS certification as a Nurse Practitioner (either Adult/Geriatric).
• Maintains a current collaborative practice agreement.
• BCLS certification required. ACLS certification required as of 6/1/21 for NPs/PAs in CAMS & Cancer Center.
• Minimum two years’ experience in an acute care setting.

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment

• Ability to perform computer work for extensive periods of time
• Occasionally move and/or transport 15 to 20 pounds
• Requires movement about the department frequently throughout the day
• Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time
• Ability to respond to frequent phone calls
• May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Hazardous chemicals are listed in the hospital’s SDS database and may be accessed via the hospital intranet.
