Job Description

Purpose of the Position:

The palliative care NP at Bellevue Hospital Center works in collaboration with our dynamic growing interdisciplinary team on our active palliative care consultation service to deliver high quality palliative care and health care services to patients in the inpatient setting. Our inpatient service includes consultations across the hospital and service to patients on the Serenity Unit, our 4 bed End‑of‑life care unit.

NP will see patient consultations independently, coordinate care with the interdisciplinary team, manage palliative care services, interact with other clinical teams, patients and their families to ensure goal concordant care and excellent symptom management.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform palliative care bedside evaluation of patients and families
  • Provide meticulous pain and symptom assessment and management
  • Assist with diagnosis, treatment and management of acute and chronic health conditions
  • Order or recommend and interpret laboratory and radiology tests
  • Prescribe medications including controlled substances to the extent delegated and licensed
  • Order treatments and medical equipment as indicated
  • Consult with PC physician or designees as needed, inform primary physician of services provided and collaboration with another physician if ordered; provide written reports to primary physician upon request
  • Arrange, participate in and lead patient and family meetings to share necessary medical information, complete advanced directives, and discuss goals of care
  • Participate with an interdisciplinary team
  • Prepare and maintain accurate patient records, charts and documents to support sound medical practice and reimbursement for services provided
  • Comply with applicable laws and regulations with respect to collaborative agreements
  • Initiate reimbursement for services rendered in the clinic setting
  • Provide training and continuing education for staff, medical residents and students
  • Adhere to the practice of confidentially regarding patients, families, staff and the organization
Minimum Qualifications
  • A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse issued by the New York State Department of Education (NYSED);
  • Current certificate as a Nurse Practitioner issued by the NYSED; and
  • Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
