Location: New York

NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center, providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The hospital facility is home to the Knapp Cardiac Care Center—an advanced heart disease diagnostic and treatment facility—as well as a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services including women’s imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. Our provisional Level 2 Trauma Center delivers comprehensive and specialized care for patients with traumatic injuries.

The Stroke Center is designated by the New York State Department of Health as a Primary Stroke Center, with neurologists available 24/7. The hospital also has multiple outpatient sites, including wound care, hemodialysis, and various primary care and specialty offices.

Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in Gastroenterology. In this role, the successful candidate—Nurse Practitioner—will be dedicated to providing quality, professional, cost‑effective health care to all patients at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk. The NP will work as a licensed independent practitioner (LIP) collaborating with a licensed physician, fulfilling a broad range of medical services that would otherwise be provided by the physician, within the scope of training/skills outlined in the collaborative agreement approved by the Credentials Committee.

The NP may provide care for all patients throughout the hospital as permitted by certification and licensure, assist in patient‑centered care, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, document according to Clinical Documentation Initiative (CDI), and, when working in surgery, assist in surgical procedures under a surgeon’s collaborative agreement. The NP on the Trauma Team must have privileges for first assist in surgery, experience in emergency medicine, and current Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification.

Job Responsibilities
  • Introduces/identifies self as a nurse practitioner.
  • Assists the physician with patient management focusing on quality care and a well‑planned, timely discharge.
  • Communicates professionally and effectively with the patient's physician, consulting physicians, case managers, nurses, and other hospital staff regarding any patient information that may affect discharge or hospital course.
  • Performs initial and ongoing assessment/history and physical examination.
  • Assesses/reassesses patient’s condition and care plan.
  • Orders and interprets tests and results (lab, radiology, EKG, etc.) based on patient need.
  • Orders medications and treatments.
  • Documents care in the chart in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Formulates diagnoses.
  • Formulates and implements patient care and treatment plans, discussing expectations, needs, and other information with physicians, nurses, case managers, and other staff, using established guidelines where applicable.
  • Obtains consents for blood products, blood transfusion, CAT scan and MRI contrast administration, and procedures performed by the PA.
  • Initiates consults with physicians and other hospital staff, including hospice and palliative care.
  • Initiates and participates in care related to end‑of‑life issues, including Do Not Resuscitate/Intubate (DNR/DNI) and Medical Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (MOLST) documentation.
  • Manages medical/surgical patient care, including emergencies requiring BLS/ACLS/PALS (if adult or family NP).
  • Performs trauma assessments/reassessments following ATLS (Trauma Team).
  • Performs peri‑ and intra‑operative assessments/reassessments.
  • Performs peri‑ and intraprocedure assessments/reassessments.
  • Rounds with physicians and other hospital staff.
  • Orders, applies, reapplies, and removes restraints.
  • Documents all pertinent patient information following departmental and hospital policies, using CDI education.
  • Writes legibly.
  • Dates, times, and signs all chart entries.
  • Uses name stamp.
  • Documents patient or family education.
  • Documents results of tests ordered or disposition of care.
  • Completes all procedure notes.
  • Documents communication with physicians.
  • Signs, dates, and verifies verbal/telephone orders by the end of each shift.
