Nurse Practitioner – Pre-Surgical Testing

Maternal/Child services, Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. St. Charles also offers services in general surgery, colon/rectal surgery, bariatric surgery, neurosurgery, ENT, pediatrics, diagnostic imaging, emergency medicine, epilepsy, stroke care, Female Pelvic Floor Disorders Center, and a nationally accredited Sleep Disorders Center.
- Collaborate with other departments to provide "one stop" care for all pre-surgical appointments and education
- Perform clinical functions during the pre-surgical testing phase of Perioperative patient care to ensure that the patient and care team are fully prepared for surgery. Activities will be under the direction of the supervising physician, in collaboration with the Anesthesiology team
- Obtain the initial Nursing and Medical history, performing a physical exam, and evaluating operative risk factors for pre-surgical patients
- Assist with pre-operative phone calls for screening and education of pre-op patients. Assist in pre-surgical areas, and other clinical areas, if necessary, when appropriate
- Participate in direct patient care and patient education as necessary; and participate in the growth and continuing education for development and serves as a resource person to other members of the health care team
- Perform a variety of functions and technical procedures necessary for patient admission, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and outcome evaluation
- Conduct health assessments of patients/families with real or potential, acute, and/or chronic health problems. Initiate referrals to specialty services and fosters continuity of care
- Initiate selected diagnostic procedures, consultation and laboratory examinations. Order and interpret necessary pre-operative testing results, clearance consultations, reports, referral responses, labs, imaging studies, etc and develop a plan of care/manage the results according to current protocols
- Interpret findings and plans of care according to collaborative practice agreements and protocols in designated areas
- Collaborate with Day Surgery and Anesthesia to staff plan for and execute plans for complex pre-op patient needs as determined by pre-surgical interaction
- Communicate concerns and changes in plan with appropriate personnel
- Conduct preoperative/pre-anesthesia history and review of systems
- Function efficiently with electronic charting
- Participate in performance improvement, research, and educational activities
- Conduct appropriate patient education activities and coaching
- Complete pre-op review of records and provides final evaluation for surgery
- Frequent communication with various disciplines including PCP's, cardiology, PT, Home Care Services, Rehab Services, Hospitalists and Pharmacists
- Follow through with physician offices/anesthesia regarding abnormal findings in the pre-op screening process
- Provide patient/family education and counseling in the areas of health promotion, maintenance, and disease prevention. Informs patients of the necessary post-discharge care instructions
- Identify quality improvement issues and develops unit-based quality improvement programs, as well as standards of care and practice
- Maintain a current level of knowledge relative to professional practice
- Participate in the evaluation of the cost effectiveness of services provided
- Collaborate with others to ensure the timely submission of charges
- Three to five years' experience as a registered nurse in medical/surgical nursing in a surgical or ambulatory setting, preferred
- Master's Degree in a Nurse Practitioner Program and National Board Certification in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), or Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP):
