Registered Professional Nurse II, Acute Care

The Registered Professional Nurse II, Acute Care is accountable for the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process. The RN assesses, plans, delivers, coordinates, integrates, and evaluates nursing care related to patient needs. The RN contributes to the support of patients through interdisciplinary teamwork.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provides nursing care and services to patients throughout the life span and in various settings consistent with educational preparation.
  • Collects, analyzes and records relevant patient health data accurately, with no more than 3-5 exceptions.
  • Analyzes assessment data to identify patient problems, with no more than 2-3 exceptions.
  • Identifies expected outcomes individualized to the patient, with no more than 2-3 exceptions.
  • Develops a plan of care that describes interventions to attain expected outcomes, with no more than 2-3 exceptions.
  • Implements and records interventions appropriate to diagnosis or patient problem, with no more than 3-5 exceptions.
  • Evaluates the patient's progress toward attainment of identified goals, with no more than 2-3 exceptions.
  • Adheres to approved, research-based practice standards, with no more than 2-3 exceptions.
  • Directs and supervises patient care provided by LPNs and support personnel 100% of the time according to department guidelines.
  • Demonstrates consideration of safety, effective utilization of equipment and materials, and cost in managing patient care.
  • Acts effectively as charge nurse, group leader or preceptor when assigned.
  • Writes a progress note that demonstrates an understanding of the patient's status and progress toward achievement of goals (80-90%).
  • Ability to function in charge nurse or leadership capacity as determined by practice arena.
  • Advocates for patients to ensure that care preserves and protects the patient's autonomy, dignity and rights.
  • Delivers care in a non-judgmental and non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to patient diversity, 100% of the time.
  • Assures that patients have informed consent signed for indicated procedures, 100% of the time.
  • Acts on behalf of patients in an ethical manner 100% of the time.
  • Adheres to ANA Code of Ethics for Professional Nurses.
  • Acquires and maintains current knowledge and skills in his or her area of practice.
  • Provides proof of current licensure validation to supervisor.
  • Completes required unit credentialing according to departmental policy by providing documented evidence of completion to supervisor.
  • Provides to supervisor evidence of completion of all required training and competency validation.
  • Participates in level appropriate number of hours of educational activity, according to pathway, related to job function annually and provides documented evidence of attendance or activity to supervisor.
  • Demonstrates clinical problem-solving ability through written exemplar, patient/family feedback, co-worker report or direct managerial observation.
  • Participates in quality improvement processes for the department and institution as assigned and as measured by supervisory observation.
  • Participates in nursing research.
  • Commits to an attitude of inquiry, research-based practice, and the advancement of nursing science as observed by managerial observation.
  • Helps to identify clinical problems requiring investigation as measured by co-worker feedback and managerial observation.
  • Assists in the collection of data within a structured format as measured by co-worker feedback and managerial observation.
  • Partners with senior nurses to use research findings in clinical practice as measured by co-worker feedback and managerial observation.
  • Performs other duties as requested and observed by supervisor or manager.
Education
  • 2 year / Associate Degree in Nursing, required or...
  • Vocational / Technical Diploma Professional Nursing Program, required or...
  • 4 year / Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, preferred

All RN's hired and do not currently hold a BSN will be expected to demonstrate enrollment in a bachelor's prepared nursing program within 4 years of hire. BSN must be completed within 10 years. RN's licensed on or before 12/19/17 are/remain exempt from this requirement.

Experience
  • Minimum one year experience as a Registered Nurse, if experience is not relevant, Registered Nurse II must complete RN residency program, required
License/Certification
  • Current NYS license as a Registered Nurse, required
  • BLS certification will be required within 6 months
  • Other certifications may be needed based on department requirements
