Position Summary
The Research Nurse works to provide and maintain comprehensive nursing care to both adult and pediatric patients in a diverse clinical research setting. The standards of care are based on the nurse’s ability to assess the patient’s healthcare needs while ensuring compliance with protocol requirements. The senior research nurse collaborates with all research team members to effectively direct and manage all aspects of the research protocol with minimal supervision.
Job ResponsibilitiesPerforms other duties as assigned.
Provides direct care to research patients utilizing the nursing process, applying knowledge and understanding of the protocol’s purpose and methodology.
Demonstrates critical nursing judgment to maintain protocol integrity without compromising patient safety and practices independently within study guidelines.
Documents changes in patient status and responses, maintains effective communication, educates patients and families about the clinical study, and participates actively in the informed consent process.
Demonstrates appropriate clinical skills related to research protocols, assesses situations, and makes critical decisions affecting research procedures.
Reviews each protocol before patient entry, addresses questions or concerns with appropriate personnel, creates protocol flow sheets, and develops, implements, and evaluates individualized plans of care.
Sets priorities based on patient care and protocol requirements, communicates effectively with all team members, and extends assistance beyond the assignment to support colleagues.
Administers stock medication safely, adheres to hospital policy, and administers selective research medication with accountability and knowledge of its effects within protocol guidelines.
Performs safe procedures within the scope of CRC Nursing, including specimen collection, PK/PD studies, venous and central access (excluding arterial lines), stimulation testing, blood product administration, fluid and medication delivery, conscious sedation, and bronchoscopy, with intense monitoring of vital signs and protocol-specific assessments.
Assesses patient and family educational needs regarding informed consent, protocol interventions, and disease relationships; initiates teaching and documents actions for continuity of care through discharge, upholding patient rights and confidentiality.
Participates in performance improvement initiatives, interdisciplinary education, and attends external formal education (CEUs).
Collaborates with other CRC nurses nationally via list service, shares research education with nursing and other disciplines, and demonstrates independent management of clinical research protocols.
• NYS RN License with current registration.
• Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or equivalent education/experience, with plans to earn a baccalaureate degree in Nursing.
• Minimum of 3 years of related experience, preferably in clinical nursing.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook) and internet applications.
• Effective verbal and written communication, strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to interface with all management levels and internal/external customers, work independently and within a team, make independent decisions, manage time, multitask, prioritize, identify and solve problems, and work well under pressure.
Registered Nurse License – NYS
Preferred QualificationsCertification in a relevant practice area.
