Overview

NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center serving residents of eastern Long Island. The hospital hosts the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with services including women's imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. The Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center delivers comprehensive and specialized care for traumatic injuries. The Stroke Center is designated as a Primary Stroke Center with neurology available 24/7.

Additional outpatient sites include wound care, a hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.

- Med Surg 2 Main
- Full Time, Nights.

Responsibilities

In this role, the successful candidate provides professional nursing care in accordance with physician treatment plans to support the comfort and well-being of patients and their families. This includes assessing patient needs, planning and implementing the treatment plan, observing progress, and documenting pertinent observations. The nurse works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary health team to meet holistic patient needs and directs the delivery of nursing care by other nursing staff.

The nurse participates in the orientation of new employees.

  • The registered nurse collects patient health data by involving the patient, family, and other health care providers.
  • Performs initial assessment based on patient presentation.
  • Records relevant data on the nursing component of the Interdisciplinary Admission Assessment.
  • Demonstrates awareness of the special needs of each age group or culture served, including patients with disabilities.
  • Ongoing assessments are performed as established by department policy and as warranted by the patient’s response.
  • Incorporates discharge planning into the admission process.
  • Analyzes assessment data to determine problem identification and identifies expected outcomes individualized to the patient.
  • Demonstrates the ability to apply theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise to anticipate and plan for patient and family care needs.
  • Analyzes assessment data to identify actual or potential problems, validated with the patient, family, and other health care providers.
  • Identifies cultural, ethnic, and spiritual aspects of patient/family dynamics related to care.
  • Recognizes patient comfort/pain management needs that may impact the plan of care and outcomes.
  • Identifies knowledge deficits for the patient and/or family.
  • Communicates expected outcomes to the patient, family, and other health care providers to promote continuity of care.
  • Develops a plan of care prescribing interventions to attain expected outcomes.
  • Collaborates with patient, family, and appropriate health care providers to develop the plan of care.
  • Forms a family-centered plan of care aligned with assessment and physician treatment plan; integrates cultural, ethnic, and spiritual aspects.
  • Incorporates teaching and learning principles in the plan of care based on identified learning needs.
  • Assists the patient and family in identifying and securing services to address health-related needs.
  • Communicates the plan of care to the patient, family, and other health care providers to promote continuity of care.
  • Documents the initial plan of care and provides updates as required.
  • Establishes realistic goals, sets priorities, and uses time efficiently.
  • Implements the plan of care for each patient and performs appropriate monitoring.
  • Adapts nursing procedures to meet the needs of the individual patient.
  • Provides education to the patient and family utilizing the educational assessment.
  • Identifies hazards to patient safety and maintains a safe environment.
  • Works collaboratively with other team members to implement interventions.
  • Assigns or delegates tasks as defined by the state nurse practice act and according to caregiver capabilities.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of drug administration, interactions, contraindications, and adverse effects; seeks resources when uncertain.
  • Complies with medication policy and procedures for order transcription/verification, drug administration, and documentation.
  • Evaluates the patient’s progress toward outcomes.
  • Documents the patient’s response to interventions and revisions to the plan of care.
  • Uses ongoing assessment data to revise outcomes and the care plan as needed.
  • Identifies barriers to achieving outcomes and utilizes resources to minimize negative impact on the patient/family.
  • Communicates with and includes the patient, family, and other health care providers in the evaluation process.
  • Provides care that respects patient rights and ethical standards.
  • Demonstrates activities that support customer satisfaction and improves nursing practice.
  • Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practices and supports measures to improve practice.
  • Maintains effective interactions with staff on the unit and in other departments.
