The senior research nurse collaborates with all members of the research team to effectively direct and manage all aspects of the research protocol with minimum supervision.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide direct care to the research patient utilizing the nursing process with knowledge of the protocol purpose and methodology.
  • Demonstrate critical nursing judgment to maintain research protocol integrity without compromising patient safety and practice independently within study guidelines.
  • Document effectively, observe changes in patient status and protocol response, maintain communication at all times, and educate patients and families about the study and optimal health. Participate actively in the informed consent process.
  • Perform appropriate clinical skills for research protocols and assess situations to make timely critical decisions.
  • Review each protocol before patient entry and address questions with appropriate personnel. Create protocol flow sheets to summarize requirements for staff nurses. Develop, implement, and evaluate a plan of care for each patient, incorporating short‑ and long‑term goals and expected outcomes.
  • Set priorities based on patient care and protocol requirements and communicate effectively with the health‑care team. Work collaboratively and be willing to assist beyond the assignment.
  • Administer stock medication safely and with knowledge of hospital policy, as well as selective research medication with accountability and understanding of its effect within protocol domains and CRC guidelines.
  • Perform accurate and safe procedures within the scope of CRC Nursing, including specimen collection, PK/PD studies, venous and central access (excluding arterial lines), stimulation testing, blood product administration, fluid and research medication delivery, conscious sedation, bronchoscopy, and intensive vital‑sign monitoring for protocol or procedure–specific adverse effects.
  • Assess patient and family educational needs regarding informed consent, protocol interventions, and disease relationships; initiate teaching, document actions, and ensure continuity of care through discharge. Maintain patient rights and confidentiality with safety focus.
  • Participate in performance‑improvement initiatives, interdisciplinary education, and attend formal education outside the medical center (CEUs).
  • Collaborate with other CRC nurses nationally via list service, share research education, and demonstrate independent management of a clinical research protocol.
