Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to oversee and coordinate the Respiratory Therapy Program within our New York State–licensed Skilled Nursing Facility. This role provides clinical oversight to ensure respiratory services are delivered safely, effectively, and in compliance with CMS regulations (42 CFR Part 483) and New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) requirements.
The RN will collaborate closely with Respiratory Therapists, medical providers, nursing leadership, and interdisciplinary team members to support residents with acute and chronic respiratory conditions while maintaining survey readiness and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Oversight & Program Management
Oversee the daily operations of the facility’s Respiratory Therapy Program in accordance with physician orders and resident care plans
Ensure respiratory treatments (e.g., oxygen therapy, nebulizers, CPAP/BiPAP, pulse oximetry monitoring, tracheostomy care) are administered per clinical standards and facility policy
Monitor residents with respiratory diagnoses including COPD, pneumonia, asthma, post-acute respiratory illness, and chronic hypoxia
Coordinate respiratory services with attending physicians, pulmonologists, and respiratory therapy providers
Regulatory Compliance & Survey Readiness
Ensure compliance with CMS F-tags, NYSDOH regulations, and facility policies related to respiratory care
Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in the medical record consistent with NYSDOH and CMS standards
Participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities related to respiratory services
Assist with preparation for NYSDOH surveys, audits, and complaint investigations related to respiratory care
Support compliance with Emergency Preparedness requirements related to oxygen-dependent residents
Staff Education & Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Provide education and competency oversight for nursing staff regarding respiratory treatments, equipment, and resident monitoring
Serve as a clinical resource for respiratory-related concerns and changes in resident condition
Collaborate with Pulmonologist to ensure continuity, consistency, and quality of care
Participate in interdisciplinary care plan meetings as indicated
Resident Safety & Infection Prevention
Ensure proper use, storage, cleaning, and maintenance of respiratory equipment in accordance with NYSDOH and infection control standards
Promote compliance with infection prevention and control practices related to respiratory treatments
Identify changes in resident respiratory status and initiate timely nursing interventions and provider notifications
Qualifications
Current, unencumbered New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license
Minimum 2–3 years of nursing experience, preferably in a Skilled Nursing Facility, subacute, or long-term care setting
Experience with respiratory care modalities including oxygen therapy, nebulizer treatments, and tracheostomy care.
Working knowledge of CMS regulations, NYSDOH requirements, and SNF clinical standards
Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
Ability to function effectively in a highly regulated healthcare environment
