Job Summary

The Nurse Manager provides leadership and support to the Medical/Surgical nursing team while ensuring safe, high-quality, patient-centered care. This role is highly visible on the unit and focuses on creating a positive experience for patients and families while supporting staff in delivering excellent care.

The Nurse Manager promotes teamwork, open communication, professional growth, and accountability. They serve as a resource and advocate for staff, help resolve concerns, and work closely with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated care. The Nurse Manager also oversees staffing, staff development, and Performance Improvement activities that support quality outcomes, patient satisfaction, and staff engagement.

Responsibilities
  • Provide hands-on, supportive leadership and maintain a visible presence on the unit.
  • Promote a positive patient and family experience and address concerns promptly.
  • Partner with patients, families, physicians, and the care team to coordinate quality care.
  • Support, coach, mentor, and recognize staff to promote engagement and professional growth.
  • Assess staff competency and identify opportunities for education and development.
  • Foster teamwork, collaboration, accountability, and a respectful work environment.
  • Assist with staffing and scheduling to meet patient and unit needs.
  • Address staff and patient concerns and facilitate effective conflict resolution.
  • Lead Performance Improvement initiatives focused on quality, safety, patient outcomes, and patient satisfaction.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage human and material resources effectively.
Requirements
  • Current New York State Registered Professional Nurse (RN) license required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required;
    Master’s Degree in Nursing or related field preferred.
  • 3–5 years of healthcare management and/or progressive nursing leadership experience.
  • Board Certification in Medical-Surgical Nursing preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience or familiarity managing in a unionized healthcare environment, including working within a collective bargaining agreement and partnering effectively with union-represented employees.
  • Experience working in a team-based environment with a strong focus on collaboration, accountability, and employee engagement.
  • Knowledge of applicable healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, quality, and patient safety principles.
  • Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with patients, families, staff, physicians, interdisciplinary teams, and labor partners.
  • Ability to develop and manage staffing patterns and schedules based on patient acuity, census, staff competency, and unit needs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient-centered care, staff development, quality improvement, and a positive patient experience.
Qualifications Education Required

Bachelor of Science or better in Nursing.
