Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Nursing/Advanced Practice Director and in collaboration with attending physicians, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide comprehensive care to patients in the outpatient Leukemia practice. The NP will participate in the evaluation, treatment, and ongoing management of patients with hematologic malignancies and will perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including bone marrow biopsies, under a collaborative practice agreement and within the scope of practice.

The NP will obtain patient histories, perform physical examinations, review laboratory and diagnostic results, develop and manage treatment plans, and provide patient education and follow-up care. The NP will also obtain informed consent, monitor patients before and after procedures, coordinate care across multidisciplinary teams, ensure adherence to quality and safety standards, and serve as a liaison to referring physicians and external providers.

Responsibilities
  • Obtain comprehensive patient histories and perform physical examinations.
  • Assess and manage patients with leukemia and other hematologic malignancies in collaboration with attending physicians.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including bone marrow biopsies and aspirates, as credentialed and appropriate.
  • Monitor patients before, during, and after procedures, ensuring patient safety and adherence to clinical protocols.
  • Review and interpret laboratory, pathology, radiology, and diagnostic test results and initiate appropriate clinical interventions.
  • Order medications, diagnostic tests, procedures, consultations, and supportive care services within the NP scope of practice.
  • Obtain informed consent and provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, symptom management, and supportive care resources.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care.
  • Conduct follow-up visits and monitor treatment response, disease progression, adverse events, and symptom management.
  • Document patient assessments, treatment plans, procedures, orders, and follow-up care in the electronic medical record in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Coordinate care with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, case managers, and other members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Serve as a liaison to referring physicians, outside providers, and transferred patients.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies, regulatory requirements, and professional standards of practice.
  • Assist with related clinical duties and perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus one to two years related experience.
  • Current New York State Nurse Practitioner license (or proof of application)
  • Current New York State Registered Nurse license
  • Board certification
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration (or eligibility).
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Hematology and/or Oncology clinical practice.
  • Experience caring for patients with leukemia or other hematologic malignancies.
  • Experience performing bone marrow biopsies and related procedures preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with Columbia University Irving Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian systems, workflows, and procedures.
  • Experience with Epic electronic medical record systems.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient-centered care and multidisciplinary collaboration.
