Registered Nurse (RN) - Corrections
In a correctional health setting, you provide comprehensive nursing care to incarcerated patients, emphasizing safety, chronic disease management, and timely access to services.
You work within a multidisciplinary team to deliver care within security and facility protocols while ensuring patient dignity and advocates for appropriate treatment.
Responsibilities- Perform triage, nursing assessments, and basic wound care in a secure facility
- Administer medications and monitor for adverse effects; manage chronic disease programs
- Coordinate with physicians, mental health specialists, and facility staff for timely care
- Document encounters in the facility EHR; ensure accurate medication administration records
- Provide patient education and discharge planning within the correctional setting
- Respond to medical emergencies and activate appropriate response teams
- Participate in quality improvement and infection control initiatives
Education:
BSN preferred; ADN or nursing diploma with corrections health experience
Licensure:
Current, active Registered Nurse license in the United States
Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) may be required depending on facility
- CPR certification
Experience or Skills:
Experience in hospital or jail/prison health settings; ability to work with diverse populations and security protocols
Experience- Experience delivering urgent and routine care in a correctional health environment
- Experience with med administration, chronic disease management, and mental health coordination
- Experience documenting in secure EHR systems and collaborating with custody and clinical staff
- Public health or corrections health experience
- Knowledge of infectious disease control and tuberculosis screening
Work within a correctional facility environment with security and safety requirements.
Shifts may include day and night rotations; care delivery involves coordinating with multiple departments under security protocols; documentation occurs in the facility EHR.
