Start Date:
Mid-January (no end date, Temp‑to‑Perm). Shift: Mon‑Fri 9:00‑17:00, five days a week in office with weekend and evening availability required.
Base pay range: $43.96/hr – $49.45/hr (subject to experience and skills).
The Zuckerman Institute at Columbia University is seeking a highly motivated individual to work in our ICM Vivarium Facility located in the Jerome L. Greene Science Center. The role supervises five Veterinary Technicians and involves scheduling, coordinating with veterinarians and researchers, and overseeing veterinary care and facility maintenance.
Responsibilities- Schedule technician assignments based on building, species, research support requirements, and staff expertise.
- Ensure work, including maintenance of medical records, meets the current standard of practice, veterinary orders, and regulatory requirements.
- Train direct reports to ensure core competencies and continued development, including support for AALAS certification.
- Train research personnel on safe handling, anesthetic and surgical techniques, and care and use of research animals.
- Maintain facilities, veterinary medicine, and research‑related equipment, supplies, and stock; ensure records are maintained per regulations.
- Ensure equipment is serviced appropriately and submit all monthly billing files on time.
- Plan for future studies to ensure resources, personnel, equipment, and supplies are available.
- Maintain knowledge of advancing research technologies and expertise in laboratory animal science and medicine.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned or requested.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience.
- 2–4 years of related experience in a research or animal clinic, veterinary setting.
- License
Required:
Licensed Veterinary Technician, Registered Veterinary Technician, or Certified Veterinary Technician. - Good communication, organization, and analytical skills.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs, climb, stoop, bend, reach, and stand for prolonged periods.
- Knowledge of equipment such as autoclaves, plasma or gas sterilization equipment, anesthetic monitoring equipment, anesthetic vaporizers, surgical support equipment, automated conveyor belt cleaning systems, and waste disposal.
- Sound judgment with a collaborative style that fosters teamwork within the broader organization.
- Experience with mechanical machinery and operations, including breaking down and setting up heavy caging.
- Participation in a Veterinary Technology Program.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
