Position OverviewTwo Licensed Veterinary Technicians will serve as Animal Health Inspectors 1 in designated counties of New York State. The role involves investigative and inspection activities to detect, control, and eradicate communicable diseases in animals. Inspectors will examine and test large domestic animals, collect laboratory samples, and review records of municipal animal shelters, pet dealers, breeders, livestock markets and premises. The position is full‑time, 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday, and may be based out of the employee’s home with travel throughout assigned regions.
Responsibilities- Conduct inspections and investigations to detect and control communicable diseases in animals.
- Inspect and test large domestic animals and collect samples for laboratory testing.
- Review records of municipal animal shelters, pet dealers, breeders, livestock markets and premises.
- Utilize veterinary medical testing devices, instruments, and animal restraint equipment.
- Travel extensively within assigned regions and occasionally out of state for overnight training sessions.
- Maintain accurate inspection and investigation reports.
- Current license to practice as a Veterinary Technician issued by the New York State Education Department.
- Associate’s degree plus 18 or more credit hours in specialized courses relating to animal health science, veterinary technology, animal husbandry or animal science.
- Preferred residency in one of the counties listed above.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle; ability to meet transportation requirements.
- Competitive salary: start at $53,764 per year (SG‑14).
- Eligible for performance evaluations and potential salary increases to the SG‑14 rate of $68,630 per year.
- Downstate pay adjustment of $4,000 per year for employees in the listed counties.

Extensive travel is required. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle during employment or otherwise demonstrate capacity to meet transportation needs. Out‑of‑state overnight travel may occur for training.
Program DetailsThis position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide program (NY HELPS), a non‑competitive appointment that may be converted to competitive status within one year of permanent appointment. Employees hired under NY HELPS are eligible for the same rights and privileges as competitive class employees after conversion.
