Job Description
The Supervisor of Veterinary Services and Quality Assurance provides support to the Director of Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR), the Attending Veterinarian and Animal Facility Manager to maintain the health and welfare of housed animals as well as AAALAC accreditation and continued compliance with all federal and state regulations. Responsibilities include providing best practices to ensure accreditation and regulatory compliance to maintain a high quality humane and ethical animal care and use program.
Activities involve periodic collection and processing of biological and/or environmental samples and conducting clinical exams, diagnostic procedures, assisting in experimental procedures, protocols, and surgery to include pre and postoperative care for all animal procedures, assist in surgery, also assist in rodent (and other lab animals when present) research procedures, anesthesiology and surgery. Under supervision from the Attending Veterinarian may provide or oversee clinical treatment and/or enrichment to research animals.
Assists in managing rodent breeding colonies. Maintains and or monitors records of medicinal and/or experimental substances and other inventories and procedures related to animal care and use. Oversees Post Approval Monitoring (PAM) of animals on IACUC approved studies to include proper identification of cages and animals according to standard operating procedures. Provides observations and follow up response with the Facility Manager to conditions of animal rooms and support areas, ensures the appropriate provision of supplies present including personal protective equipment (PPE).
Direct or guide staff assessing, sampling, testing of animals for colony and individual health, environmental enrichment, research use, and medical care of injured or sick animals.
- Direct and train staff in animal husbandry/breeding colony maintenance and monitoring, animal enrichment and veterinary services as appropriate
- Animal health monitoring and treatment under guidance by the Attending Veterinarian
- Rederivation of conventional rodents to specific pathogen free status
- Occupational health and safety in the facility
- Animal import and export
- Monitoring and sampling of the facility environment
- Maintain Veterinary Equipment, Operating Room (OR) suite and procedure rooms
- Genetic monitoring/tail cutting/identification services
- Research animal procedures
- Assists in preparation of Annual Facility Operating Budget and facility material orders as needed
- Assists in census and cost recovery procedures
- Scheduling Animal Facility Staff
- Collaboration in IACUC approved research studies
- Attends research planning, participates when requested or appointed on institutional committees such as the IACUC and IBC
- Training
- Euthanasia
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree, Licensed Veterinary Technician and four years of professional experience in a Laboratory Animal Care and use Program. Substitutions:
Masters degree or higher in biotechnology, or animal science and Certification as Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) or Manager (CMAR) with at least three years experience in a research animal care and use program. Ph.D in appropriate field may substitute an additional year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Veterinary Degree with a current license to practice in New York, Board Eligible in the specialty of Laboratory Animal Medicine.
