Licensed Veterinary Technician

The Licensed Veterinary Technician’s (‘LVT’) role is to perform medical tests in a laboratory environment for use in treatment and diagnosis of diseases in an animal in addition to assist veterinarians in daily preparation, administration, and final completion of appointments and treatments.

• Veterinarian Assistance: Support veterinarians during patient examinations and treatments, both in-clinic and ambulatory, following detailed protocols in the Technician Manual.
• Patient Admission and Discharge: Manage admissions and discharges in line with clinic protocols.
• Medical Record Management: Accurately maintain and update in-house medical records and ensure lab test results are correctly recorded and communicated.
• Laboratory Duties: Perform in-house lab tests, prepare lab samples for referral laboratories, and maintain laboratory logs and inventory of supplies.
• Pharmacy Management: Prepare prescriptions and process online pharmacy requests as per clinic procedures.
• Surgical Support: Handle pre-surgical preparations, administer anesthesia, monitor surgeries, and manage post-surgical clean-up.
• Instrument Care: Clean, wrap, and sterilize instruments to maintain an adequate and sterile supply.
• Vehicle Preparation: Ensure veterinary vehicles are stocked and ready, with supplies organized for daily appointments.
• Animal Husbandry: Provide care such as feeding, watering, and following veterinary instructions for horse management, including stall and paddock maintenance.
• Communication: Maintain effective communication with doctors and relay necessary information between doctors and horse owners.
• Housekeeping and Safety: Perform routine housekeeping, ensure OSHA & Safety compliance, report dispensed Controlled Substances, and maintain hospital standards in various areas.
• Facility and Equipment Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance and repair scheduling of equipment and upkeep the barn and hospital facilities to standards.
• Inventory Management: Record and manage inventory supplies, ensuring all areas are stocked appropriately.
• Customer and Staff Interaction: Provide customer service, train co-workers and students, and participate in staff meetings.
• Professional Development: Engage in continuing education opportunities to maintain licensure and stay current with industry standards.

NYS Accredited Veterinary Technician Degree

Valid NYS veterinary Technician Licensure

Valid Driver’s License

Experience

Prior experience in a veterinary setting is helpful.

Equine knowledge and skillset preferred.

Physical Requirements

Ability to restrain and handle equine patients.

Prolonged periods of standing, reaching, bending, and lifting.

Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Ability to work in a variety of environments (office setting, barn, outdoor elements, driving – work vehicles, tractor).
